Getting Around Ust-Kamenogorsk
Ust-Kamenogorsk — also known by its Kazakh name, Oskemen — is the largest city in eastern Kazakhstan and the administrative center of the East Kazakhstan Region. For a visitor, the good news is that the city is compact enough to navigate with a mix of trams, buses, and taxis, and the main arrival points (the airport, the railway station, and the bus stations) all connect into that network.
Trams
The city has a tram system that is old but very pleasant to ride, and it is one of the more characterful ways to move around. Trams run on a handful of lines serving the city, so they are best treated as a convenient option along the main corridors rather than a way to reach every corner of town. If your destination lies on a tram route, it is an easy and comfortable choice.
Buses and Intercity Services
Buses move easily around the city and form the backbone of local public transport. Beyond local routes, Ust-Kamenogorsk has an intercity bus service operating from two bus stations:
- The larger and more extensive network is based at the station by the railway station, located near the Sports Palace on Novoshkolnaya Street. From here, buses serve destinations across Kazakhstan as well as Russian cities such as Krasnoyarsk.
- The second bus station covers a smaller area with fewer routes.
For a visitor arriving by long-distance bus, note that services from Almaty leave from the Sairan bus station and arrive at the main Ust-Kamenogorsk bus station on Abai Street. Buses from Astana and Almaty run daily, and the trip is overnight in both cases.
Rail
Ust-Kamenogorsk is served by the Oskemen-1 railway station. Daily trains connect the city with Almaty and Astana; the journey takes roughly a day, and tickets range from inexpensive third-class seats up to sleeper fares at the higher end. If you are arriving by rail, the railway station is also the hub for the city's most extensive intercity bus network, which makes onward connections straightforward.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are a practical option for reaching places the tram and bus routes do not cover, and for trips with luggage. As with most Kazakh cities, you can flag a car on the street or arrange a ride by phone or app; agree on the fare before you set off if you are hailing informally.
Walking
The central parts of Ust-Kamenogorsk are walkable, and strolling between the center, the riverside, and nearby landmarks is feasible on foot. For longer hops across the city, though, you will want to use the tram, a bus, or a taxi rather than walking the whole way.
Getting from the Airport into the City
Ust-Kamenogorsk has an international airport, Oskemen Airport. It is served by Air Astana and SCAT, with several flights a week from Almaty; SCAT also flies to Semipalatinsk and, once a week, to Bayan Olgii in Mongolia. From the airport, taxis are the most direct way into the city center, and local buses connect the airport area with the rest of town. If you would rather not negotiate on arrival, arranging a transfer or a ride-hailing pickup in advance is the simplest approach.
Practical Tips
- Buy tram and bus tickets on board; keep small change handy for fares.
- Use the railway station area as your intercity hub — it hosts both the main bus station and the train station.
- For long-distance departures to Almaty, remember that buses leave from Sairan station in Almaty and arrive at the Abai Street bus station here.
- If you are heading onward to Russia, check the routes from the Novoshkolnaya Street bus station, which serves destinations such as Krasnoyarsk.
