Getting Around Pavlodar
Pavlodar is a compact city on the Irtysh River, and getting around it is straightforward. Visitors can choose between an extensive tram network, a combined bus and minibus system, inexpensive taxis, and simply walking. The city is pedestrian-friendly, especially in its well-organized downtown, where tree-lined streets and squares make strolling pleasant, and the Irtysh River embankment promenade is easy to reach on foot. Many destinations within the city are within walking distance, so if you are looking for a little exercise, you may not need transport at all.
Tram Network
Pavlodar's tram is the backbone of local public transport and is described as the largest tram network in Kazakhstan. It covers significant portions of the city, making it a practical way to reach many destinations. The network has a long history, having begun service in the mid-1960s, and its fleet has been undergoing renewal, with locally produced trams introduced to shore up what had been an aging public transport infrastructure. For a visitor, the tram is generally reliable and accessible for most trips around town.
Buses and Minibuses
Alongside the tram, Pavlodar has a fairly simple yet complete bus and marshrutka (minibus) system. Buses and minibuses complement the tram routes and extend service across the city. To learn more about the bus system, you can download an electronic interactive map of the city: the little "A" circles on the map mark the bus stops, and clicking them shows which buses serve each stop. The Avtobys app is also available for navigating bus routes. Public transport overall is generally reliable and accessible for most destinations.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are inexpensive and readily available, and they can be taken most places in the city. Fares are higher for trips to the outer regions of the city than for journeys within the center. Because taxis are cheap and easy to find, they are a convenient option when the tram or bus does not go where you need, or late in the day.
Walking and Cycling
Walking is a genuinely practical way to get around central Pavlodar. The downtown is compact and well organized, with tree-lined streets and squares, and the Irtysh River embankment promenade offers a pleasant route along the water. Cycling is possible and can be scenic along the embankment, but there are few dedicated bike lanes and no comprehensive bike infrastructure, and winter weather poses challenges. Cycling is therefore best treated as a leisure activity rather than a regular way to commute.
Getting from the Airport into the City
Pavlodar is served by Pavlodar Airport. The airport connects the city with other destinations by air, including flights to and from Astana and Almaty on Air Astana and flights to and from Moscow on S7. Once you land, taxis are the most direct way into the city, and taxis in Pavlodar are inexpensive and available. The city's bus, minibus, and tram networks provide the alternative for reaching your destination within Pavlodar once you are in town.
Arriving by Train or Bus
If you are arriving overland, Pavlodar is reachable by rail and by long-distance bus. Trains connect the city with Almaty, either via Astana or via Semei, and with Astana by an evening train. Several buses a day also run from Astana, and buses connect Pavlodar with Omsk in Russia. Long-distance and regional buses are available from most surrounding cities. Once you arrive at the station or bus terminal, the local tram, bus, and minibus networks, along with taxis, will get you to the rest of the city.
