Getting Around Gumi: A Visitor's Guide
Gumi is a major electronics-industry city in Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea, and while it has no metro system of its own, it is well served by buses, trains, and taxis. This guide covers the practical options for moving around the city and reaching it from the nearest airports.
Arriving by Air
Gumi does not have its own airport, so visitors typically fly into one of three nearby airports and continue overland:
- Daegu International Airport — the closest option to Gumi, roughly a 40- to 50-minute drive. It offers domestic flights (such as to Jeju) as well as limited international routes.
- Gimhae International Airport (Busan) — about a 1-hour-40-minute to 2-hour drive from Gumi, with a wide range of international flights.
- Cheongju International Airport — roughly a 2-hour drive, with domestic flights to Jeju and several international destinations.
From Daegu International Airport, limousine buses connect directly to Gumi; they depart from Gate 3 of the passenger terminal and cost ₩8,000 in cash. For Incheon International Airport, the most economical route is a combination of bus and subway (Line 7), costing roughly ₩19,000–₩33,000 and taking around 4 hours and 20 minutes.
Rail: Regular and High-Speed Trains
Gumi Station is the city's main railway station, located on Gumi-daero, and sits on the Gyeongbu Line. It is served by frequent Mugunghwa and ITX-Saemaeul trains connecting to major cities such as Seoul, Daegu, and Busan. A typical fare is around ₩2,500. The Daegyeong Line, which links Daegu with major cities in Gyeongsangbuk-do, also serves the station, making travel to nearby cities easier.
For high-speed KTX services, two stations serve the Gumi area:
- Gimcheon–Gumi Station — a major KTX station on the Gyeongbu High-Speed Railway, located in Oksan-ri, Nam-myeon, about 15 minutes from Gumi. It offers high-speed connections to Seoul, Busan, Daejeon, and more. The station's registered name is "Gimcheon-Gumi," and in practice the full designation including "Gumi" is commonly used.
- Wonpyeong Station — in Wonpyeong-dong, Gumi, another KTX station improving access to the Gyeongbu High-Speed Railway network.
Train schedules and fares can be checked and booked in real time on the Korail website or mobile app.
Metro and Metropolitan Rail
Gumi has no subway or metro in the conventional sense — there is no line circulating within the city. However, the Daegyeong Line (Daegu Metropolitan Railway), the first metropolitan railway outside the Seoul Metropolitan Area, opened and began operating in December 2024. This electric railway connects Gumi Station and Sagok Station in Gumi to Daegu and Gyeongsan, and it allows transfers with the Daegu subway and city buses. It is not a city-circulating subway, but it enables travel to the adjacent Daegu metropolitan area and significantly improves public transport connectivity across the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region.
Buses
City buses are the main way to get around Gumi. The network is operated by Gumi Bus Co., Ltd. and Ilseon Transportation Co., Ltd. through a joint dispatch system, and routes cover major areas including Gumi Station, City Hall, Geumosan, Indong, and the Sandong Advanced Industrial Complex. Most routes are covered, with a few exceptions such as numbers 91, 184, and 190-3.
- Fares: about ₩1,500 for adults, with discounts for teenagers and children.
- Payment: transit cards such as T-money and Cashbee are accepted, and transfer discounts are available.
- Hours: most buses run from around 05:30 to 22:30, though schedules vary by route.
- Navigation tip: bus stops are mainly labeled in Korean, so first-time visitors are advised to use navigation apps like KakaoMap or Naver Map.
For travel beyond the city, Gumi has two main bus terminals:
- Gumi Intercity Bus Terminal (Gumi-daero) — serves intercity routes to Seoul, Daegu, Busan, Gwangju, and Incheon, with local buses connecting to downtown Gumi and major districts.
- Gumi Express Bus Terminal (Wonpyeong-dong) — handles express buses to destinations including Seoul (Gangnam), Daegu, and Busan, and is conveniently located near the city center.
Intercity buses also run to nearby cities such as Daegu and Gimcheon, with several buses per day from Seoul. At both terminals, travelers can transfer conveniently to city buses for access to downtown or tourist destinations. Smaller stops such as Go-ah, Hae-pyeong, and Jang-cheon complement the main hubs.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
The source material does not describe taxi or ride-hailing services in Gumi in detail. As in most Korean cities, taxis are a straightforward option for short trips or when buses are not running, and visitors can expect metered fares. For app-based navigation and locating services, KakaoMap and Naver Map are the recommended tools.
Walking
Walkability in Gumi depends on where you stay. The express bus terminal is conveniently located near the city center, and the intercity terminal offers easy transfers to local buses for reaching downtown districts. Beyond the central areas, the city's key destinations — including Gumi Station, City Hall, Geumosan, Indong, and the Sandong Advanced Industrial Complex — are spread out and best reached by bus or taxi rather than on foot.
Practical Tips
- Buy a T-money or Cashbee transit card for city buses to benefit from transfer discounts.
- Use KakaoMap or Naver Map for navigation, since bus stops are mainly labeled in Korean.

- If arriving at Daegu International Airport, the limousine bus from Gate 3 is the simplest direct option to Gumi (₩8,000 cash).
