Getting Around Yeoju
Yeoju is a city in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, and it sits in the easternmost part of the province's southeastern corner. It became a city in September 2013 and is known, along with neighbouring Icheon, as a major centre of contemporary South Korean ceramics. For a visitor, the practical picture is a compact city core served by a rail line and a bus network, with taxis filling in the gaps and a strong local emphasis on cycling.
Rail and Subway
Yeoju is served by the Gyeonggang subway line, which links the city to the wider Seoul metropolitan network. There is no direct mainline train from Seoul to Yeoju; instead, the rail option involves connecting onto this line. Stations serving the Yeoju area include Yeoju station, Sejongdaewangneung station and Ganam station. Because the line is part of the subway system rather than a separate national rail service, you can expect to use standard metro-style ticketing and transfer arrangements rather than booking a reserved intercity seat.
There is no tram network in Yeoju. Rail access to the city is entirely via this subway line.
Buses and Public Transport
Buses are the mainstay of public transport in and around Yeoju. The city has two principal bus gateways:
- Yeoju Bus Terminal (여주 종합 터미널), at 85, Sejong-ro — the main intercity and local hub.
- Neungseo Intercity Bus Terminal (능서시외버스정류장), at 80-14, Yong-eun 1-ri, Sejongdaewang-myeon — a secondary intercity stop.
For getting around once you arrive, Yeoju runs a Yeoju Tourism Loop Bus, a sightseeing-oriented service designed to connect visitors with the area's attractions. Local transit buses also operate within the city.
For reaching Yeoju from Seoul by bus, Ko Bus (kobus.co.kr) runs a direct service from Seoul Express Bus Terminal to Yeoju Bus Terminal, departing roughly every half hour throughout the day. This is generally the simplest and cheapest way in. Tickets can be bought through the operator, and the service is frequent enough that you rarely need to plan far ahead.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are available throughout Yeoju and can be taken anywhere in the city, with fares starting from around ₩4,800. Ride-hailing is also an option: Kakao Taxi operates in the area, and International Taxi can be booked for longer or pre-arranged journeys. For a direct trip from Seoul, a taxi is the fastest door-to-door choice but by far the most expensive.
Walking and Cycling
Yeoju actively promotes tourism by bicycle, and the city's official website sets out dedicated bicycle tour courses. Public bicycles are available for use, which makes cycling a genuinely practical way to explore rather than a niche option. Walking works well within the city centre and at individual sites, but the wider area is spread out, so pairing walking with a bicycle or a bus is the sensible approach.
Getting There from the Airport
Yeoju does not have its own airport, so arrivals come through the Seoul gateway airports and continue overland. The two workable routes are:
- By bus: travel into Seoul and pick up the direct Ko Bus service from Seoul Express Bus Terminal to Yeoju Bus Terminal. This is the recommended and cheapest option, with departures about every 30 minutes.
- By rail: there is no direct train, so the rail route means taking the Suseo SRT high-speed service from Suseo to Dongtan, then transferring via Dongtan Station and Seongnam Station onto the Gyeonggang subway line to reach Yeoju Station. This takes longer than the bus and costs more, but it suits travellers who prefer rail.
Driving is also viable — the Jungbu Naeryuk Expressway passes through the city — and a taxi can be booked for the whole journey if cost is not a concern.
Practical Tips
- Buy intercity bus tickets through the operator (Ko Bus) or at the terminal; the Seoul–Yeoju service is frequent, so same-day travel is usually fine.
- Use the subway line for rail travel and expect metro-style ticketing rather than reserved intercity seats.
- Keep the Yeoju Tourism Loop Bus in mind if you want to cover the main sights without arranging your own transport.
- Consider a public bicycle if you want to follow the city's bicycle tour courses.
- Yeoju has a good range of accommodation, with many hotels available in the city, so you can base yourself centrally and travel out from there.
