Getting Around Hwado
Hwado is a town in Namyangju, Gyeonggi Province, and the practical reality for visitors is that it sits on the outer edge of the Seoul metropolitan transport web rather than at its centre. Journeys here are usually built from a short local hop to a rail or subway station, followed by a longer ride into the wider Seoul network. Plan on transferring at least once for most trips of any length.
Rail and the Seoul Subway Network
Hwado does not have its own subway station, so the rail network is reached via nearby stations. The key connection for onward travel is Maseok Station, served by Korail (the national rail operator). From Maseok you can take a Korail train to Wangsimni Station, a major interchange in eastern Seoul, and from there join Seoul Subway Line 5 to reach destinations across the city — including Gimpo International Airport Station at the western end of the line.
Practical points for using this route:
- Korail trains on this stretch run roughly hourly, so check times before setting out rather than turning up and hoping.
- Wangsimni is the point where you switch from Korail to the Seoul Subway; allow time to change lines within the station.

Buses and Other Public Transport
Long-distance and intercity buses fill the gaps the rail network leaves. TxBus, for example, runs services from Cheongpyeong Bus Terminal to Gimpo Airport Domestic Terminal roughly every half hour, with a journey of about an hour on the bus itself. Note that reaching Cheongpyeong in the first place is part of the trip, so the total door-to-door time is longer than the bus segment alone.

- Buy tickets at the terminal or through the operator; for airport-bound services, book or arrive early enough to allow for the connecting leg to the terminal.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are the simplest option if you are travelling with luggage or a group, and they are the only mode that takes you directly from Hwado to a destination such as the airport without a change. Ride-hailing apps (including services such as Mozio and BlaBlaCar) also operate in the area and can be booked on demand. Both are considerably more expensive than public transport, so weigh the convenience against the cost, particularly for longer runs into Seoul.
Walkability
Hwado itself is a compact town, and the practical approach for a visitor is to walk the local streets and use a taxi, bus or train for anything beyond the centre. Because the rail and express bus connections sit at stations and terminals rather than in the town core, expect to cover the first or last stretch of most longer journeys on foot or by a short local ride.
Getting There from the Airport
There is no direct bus or train between Hwado and Seoul Gimpo Airport (GMP) — every public transport option involves at least one transfer. The main choices are:
- Train plus subway (the cheapest option): take a Korail train from Maseok Station to Wangsimni Station, then switch to Seoul Subway Line 5 to Gimpo International Airport Station. The Korail leg takes around half an hour and runs roughly hourly.
- Bus: TxBus runs from Cheongpyeong Bus Terminal to Gimpo Airport Domestic Terminal about every thirty minutes, with the bus portion taking a little over an hour; the full journey including transfers takes longer.
- Ride-hailing: bookable on demand for a direct trip.
- Taxi: a direct, door-to-door ride, and the most expensive of the options.
- Driving yourself: the road route is straightforward if you have a car.
Whichever you choose, build in buffer time: the transfers are the part most likely to slow you down, and the hourly Korail service means a missed train can cost you a long wait.
