Getting Around Jeongeup

Jeongeup is a city in North Jeolla Province, and its transport network is built around a main rail station and a bus station that sits close to it. For a visitor, that pairing is the key to the whole city: most journeys begin by arriving at the station area and continuing from there by bus or taxi.

Rail Connections

Jeongeup Station connects the town to the wider Korean rail network. The city lies on the Honam Line, which links it toward Seoul and Mokpo, and it also sits on the Honam Expressway, with the Seohaean Expressway within easy reach. In practice, this means the train is the natural way to reach Jeongeup from elsewhere in the country, and the station is your anchor point once you arrive.

Note that Jeongeup has no metro or tram system. Rail and road are the only intercity options, and within the city you rely on buses, taxis, and your own two feet.

Buses

A bus station stands near the rail station, and it offers connections to the national park outside of the town. If Naejang-san National Park is on your itinerary — and for many visitors it is the main reason to come, especially in autumn when the foliage draws crowds — the bus is the straightforward way to get there without a car. Because the bus station and rail station are neighbours, transferring between train and bus is simple.

Taxis

Taxis are available, but this is the one part of getting around Jeongeup where you should keep your guard up. It is easy to get ripped off by drivers who charge far more than the normal fee — several times the going rate, per person. Try to avoid these taxis, and avoid travelling at peak traffic times, especially weekends, when the problem is worse. This has been a long-standing issue, and the city government has not done anything effective to improve it, so treat fare negotiation with care and prefer clearly metered, standard services.

Walking

Walking works well around the station and bus station area, where the two are close together and the town centre is compact. Beyond that, the city spreads out: the east side is mountainous, dominated by Naejang-san National Park and Ibamsan, while the west is a plain around the Dongjin River, with several streams including the Jeongeupcheon running through the area. Distances to outlying sights and the national park make walking impractical for those, so plan to combine walking in town with buses or taxis for longer trips.

Reaching Jeongeup from the Airport

What it does confirm is that Jeongeup is connected to the wider Korean rail network via Jeongeup Station, and that the city sits on the Honam Expressway with the Seohaean Expressway within easy reach, providing links to Seoul and Mokpo. For a visitor arriving by air, the practical approach is therefore to reach a major rail or expressway hub and continue to Jeongeup by train or coach, arriving at the station area where local buses and taxis take over.
