Getting Around Kitale
Kitale is a town in the north west of Kenya, in Trans Nzoia county, sitting at an elevation of around 1,900 metres between Mount Elgon and the Cherang'any Hills. It is a compact highland town, and most visitor movement happens on foot, by matatu, or by taxi. There is no metro or tram system in Kitale, and the rail line serving the town has been under rehabilitation.
Walking
Kitale is a walkable town for the core areas. The town centre, the Kitale Museum (the National Museum of Western Kenya, a natural history museum), and the Kitale Showground are the main places of interest, and these are the sorts of destinations a visitor can reasonably reach on foot from central accommodation. Given the town's elevation, expect cooler highland conditions than in much of Kenya, and plan for rain, since Kitale has a temperate oceanic climate.
Matatus and Buses
Matatus and buses are the main form of public transport for moving between Kitale and other towns, and they are also how many locals travel in and out of the town. From Kitale you can reach:
- Webuye — about 1 hour
- Eldoret — about 2 hours
- Kisumu — about 4 hours
- Nakuru — about 4 hours by Easy Coach
- Lodwar — about 6–8 hours
- Nairobi — about 7 hours by Easy Coach
Easy Coach is the named long-distance operator serving Nairobi and Nakuru. For shorter regional hops, matatus are the usual option. Tickets are bought from the operator or crew at the point of departure rather than through any central pass or card system.
Rail
Kitale has a railway station, but the railway network in Western Kenya has been under rehabilitation, and the line between Kitale and Eldoret was expected to reopen around 2022–2023. A visitor should therefore not assume passenger rail is available and should check the current status locally before planning a journey by train. There is no metro or tram network in Kitale.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are a practical option for trips around town and for reaching the airport or outlying destinations. Because Kitale's public transport is built around matatus and buses rather than a formal urban transit network, taxis fill the gap for door-to-door travel. Agree on the fare before you set off, as is standard practice for taxis in Kenya.
Getting In From the Airport
Kitale Airport is located in the town, which makes the transfer into the centre short and straightforward compared with airports serving larger cities. Taxis are the natural choice for the final leg into town. For onward travel, the road connection to Eldoret runs north west, and Eldoret is the nearest larger town for connections beyond the immediate area.
Practical Notes
- There is no metro, tram, or urban rail system to navigate — plan around walking, matatus, buses, and taxis.
- Long-distance coach services such as Easy Coach are the way to reach Nairobi and Nakuru; matatus cover closer towns like Webuye, Eldoret, and Kisumu.
- Rail service to Eldoret has been under rehabilitation, so confirm before relying on it.
- The town's highland setting means cooler weather and regular rain — pack accordingly for walking.
