Getting Around Karuri: A Visitor's Guide

Karuri sits in Kiambu County, close to Nairobi, and is often described as one of Nairobi's "dormitories" because so many people live here while working in the city and neighbouring towns. That proximity, plus adequate transportation links, is exactly what makes Karuri practical to visit — but it also shapes how you move around. This guide covers the modes of transport available to a visitor, how they connect, and how to reach the city from the airport.

How Tourists Move Around

Karuri is a town in Kiambu County that hosts a town council, and its main town grew out of a pre-colonial meeting centre where Kikuyu paramount chiefs gathered. Today it serves as the divisional headquarters for Kiambaa division, which helps explain why it has a functioning transport network despite its size. The surrounding landscape — hills, plateaus and high-level structural plains — makes road development fairly easy, so road-based transport is the backbone of getting around.

For a visitor, the practical takeaway is simple: expect to move by road. Public buses and matatus (shared minibuses) are the main ways people travel, supplemented by taxis and ride-hailing for shorter or more comfortable trips.

Rail, Metro and Trams

Karuri has no metro or tram network, and there is no direct train service to the town. Kenya Railways does operate a service on the Nairobi–Nanyuki corridor — the Sagana–Makadara/Mwisho service — but it runs only twice weekly and takes roughly three and a half hours. Fares are inexpensive, with economy and first-class options available, and tickets can be booked through Kenya Railways (contact: 0709 907 555, info@krc.co.ke, krc.co.ke; online booking at metickets.krc.co.ke).

If you want to use the train, treat it as a special excursion rather than a routine way to get around, and check the schedule in advance since it does not run daily.

Buses and Other Public Transport

Buses are the primary form of public transit serving Karuri, and the area is served by several bus routes. Two routes are particularly useful for visitors:

The nearest bus stops to Karuri are Banana Terminus and Kobil/Banana, both only a short walk from the town centre. These stops put you within easy reach of local landmarks such as Banana Shopping Centre, Banana Hill Art Gallery, Karuri Police Station and several churches and schools.

Beyond the buses, matatus are the other mainstay of public transport. Matatu routes are widely used for connections between towns — for example, route 237 links Thika Town to Koja, and route 34J runs from Kencom/Ambassadeur in Nairobi to the JKIA passenger boarding area. Matatus are frequent and inexpensive, typically departing every ten minutes on busy corridors.

Nairobi's wider transit context is bus-based: the city has one transit type — bus — operated by several agencies, including KBS. So if your plans take you into Nairobi, plan around buses and matatus rather than rail.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis and ride-hailing services fill the gaps that buses and matatus leave, especially for short trips, late nights, or journeys with luggage. Rideshare and airport transfer options are available on demand in the area, and a taxi is a common way to start a longer journey — for instance, taking a taxi from Karuri to Thika Town before continuing by matatu.

For airport runs, a pre-booked rideshare or transfer is the most direct option, since it avoids the multiple connections of public transport.

Walkability

Walking works well for getting around the immediate town centre. The main bus stops — Banana Terminus and Kobil/Banana — are each about a seven-minute walk from Karuri, and many of the town's landmarks, shops and services cluster nearby. The terrain is generally favourable: the hills, plateaus and high-level plains that characterise the area make road development relatively easy, which in turn supports walkable local connections.

That said, walking is best suited to short, local trips. For anything beyond the town centre, you will want a bus, matatu or taxi.

Getting from the Airport into the City

Nairobi Airport (NBO) is a considerable distance from Karuri by road, so plan your transfer in advance. You have a few main options:

Whichever option you choose, allow generous time — road transfers between Karuri and the airport take well over an hour in normal conditions, and the multi-leg public transport route takes considerably longer.
