Getting Around Uruma: An Overview
Uruma spreads across the eastern coast of southern Okinawa Island, the Katsuren Peninsula, and the Yokatsu Islands, so how you move around depends a lot on where you're headed. The mainland districts are served by local buses and taxis, while the islands are reached by road over the sea or by boat. There is no train service in Uruma itself, so plan on buses, taxis, rental cars, and ferries rather than rail.
Rail, Metro and Trams
Uruma has no railway station. The nearest rail station is in Naha, and from there you continue to Uruma by taxi or bus. Okinawa's rail and tram network is concentrated in the Naha area, so if you're basing yourself in Uruma you should treat rail as a way to reach Naha rather than a way to get around the city.
Buses and Public Transport

Walkability
Uruma is a sprawling city that includes coastal areas, a peninsula, and offshore islands, so walking works best for exploring individual districts, beaches, and sightseeing spots rather than for getting between them. For isolated beaches and scenic spots in particular, a rental car is useful.
Rental Cars and Ferries
- Rental cars are available at Naha Airport and locally, and are the most practical option for reaching out-of-the-way beaches and scenic spots.
- Ferry services connect the major islands, which is relevant if you're travelling from mainland Japan or hopping between islands.
- The Kaichu-doro, a sea road crossing the water from the Katsuren Peninsula, links the islands of Henza, Hamahiga, Miyagi, and Ikei by road.
- Tsuken Island is reachable in about 15 minutes by high-speed boat.
