Getting Around Tottori-shi

Tottori-shi is a compact, manageable city for visitors, and most trips revolve around a simple pattern: use the rail and bus network to reach a district or attraction, then explore on foot. The city's best-known sight, the Tottori Sand Dunes, sits just outside the urban core and is served by a direct bus link from the main station, making it an easy half-day trip without a car.

Rail and Trams

Rail services in the area are operated by JR-West, and timetables for these services are published for travellers planning trips to the dunes and surrounding parts of the San'in Kaigan National Park. Tottori Station is the natural anchor for rail travel into and around the city, and it doubles as the main gateway for onward buses.

For a visitor, the practical takeaway is that rail is the way you arrive in Tottori and the way you connect to other towns along the coast, while local movement within the city and out to the dunes is handled mainly by bus. There is no metro system to navigate, which keeps things simple.

Buses and Public Transport

Buses are the workhorse of local transport in Tottori-shi, and they are the recommended way to reach the sand dunes from the city centre.

Because timetables vary by operator and season, check the current schedule before you set out, especially if you are planning an early or late visit. Tickets are bought on boarding or through the operator's usual arrangements; the bus terminal at Tottori Station is the easiest place to sort this out before you travel.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis are a straightforward fallback for short hops, late arrivals, or when bus timings do not suit. They are particularly handy for the final stretch to the dunes if you miss a bus, though the bus is the more economical and better-documented option. Ride-hailing is not a major part of the transport mix here, so plan around taxis and buses rather than assuming an app-based car will be readily available.

Walking

Central Tottori-shi is walkable, and once you are at the dunes the experience is entirely on foot. The dunes themselves are part of San'in Kaigan National Park and have no entrance gate or admission fee, so you can simply walk in. Note that sand graffiti or writing messages on the dunes is prohibited by ordinance.

Two useful practical notes for walkers at the dunes:

Arriving by Air

Tottori Airport is the city's air gateway, with ANA flights connecting it to Haneda Airport. The key connection for visitors is a limousine bus that runs between Tottori Airport and Tottori Station, linking the airport directly to the city's main rail and bus hub. From Tottori Station you can then pick up the local buses to the dunes or continue by rail.

Arriving by Car

If you are driving, the dunes area is roughly twenty minutes from Tottori Interchange on the Tottori Expressway. There is no dedicated parking at the visitor centre itself; instead, use the "Tottori Sand Dunes Parking Lot" in front of the visitor centre. Parking is charged per twenty-four hours, with separate rates for cars, minibuses, large buses, and motorbikes, and there are no admission restrictions, so parking is available early in the morning and at night. For parking enquiries, the Nature Park Foundation Tottori Branch can be reached during daytime hours, with a call centre available outside those hours.
