Getting to Yokohama from the Airport
Yokohama does not have its own airport; travelers typically arrive via Tokyo's two main airports. From Narita Airport, you can reach the city by train or bus. Several Narita Express trains run directly to Yokohama. Alternatively, limousine buses operate frequently between Narita and the Yokohama City Air Terminal (YCAT). For a more budget-friendly option from Narita, you can take the Keisei Main Line with a transfer at Aoto, or use the Sky Access line, which offers limited daily runs through to Yokohama.
From Haneda Airport, the most direct route is taking the Keikyu Line's Express service. These trains reach Yokohama Station in approximately 30 to 35 minutes. Depending on your final destination, you may stay on these trains until they reach specific stations or transfer at Keikum-Kamata to other main lines heading toward Tokyo.
Navigating the Rail and Metro Network
The rail network is the primary way to move between Yokohama and the surrounding regions. Several different lines connect the city to central Tokyo, including the Tokyu Toyoko Line, various JR lines (such as the Ueno-Tokyo Line, Shonan-Shinjuku Line, and Keihin-Tohoku Line), and the Keikyu Main Line. These trains offer frequent service and vary in speed and price based on the specific line and express status.
Within the city, the Minato Mirai Line is a key transit option for tourists. It connects Yokohama Station to the harborfront and Chinatown, passing through several architecturally significant stations. Because of the high cost of maintaining these designer-class stations, the line offers a one-day unlimited ride ticket for visitors. For local travel, the Yokohama Subway consists of two lines: the Blue Line (connecting Azamino to Shonandai) and the Green Line (H1yoshi to Nakayama).
Buses and Alternative Transport
For sightseeing in specific districts, specialized bus services are available. The Akai Kutsu Bus is a vintage-style red bus that operates on a loop around Minato Mirai, Chinatown, and Motomachi. It offers both single-trip tickets and one-day passes for convenience.
Water transport provides a scenic way to travel between JR Yokohama Station, Minato Mirai, and Yamashita Park via the "Sea Bass" boat. For those preferring more traditional or unique experiences, rickshaws are available within Chinatown, and "Cyclopolitain" (velo taxis) can be found in the harbor area.
Walkability and Local Navigation
While Yokohama is not considered an automobile-friendly city for visitors, it is well-served by public transportation and walking. The Minato Mirai Line serves as a primary corridor for accessing major tourist landmarks. Many areas, particularly those near the harbor and Chinatown, are accessible via walking or short hops on local transit.
