Getting Around Takarazuka
Takarazuka is a compact city, and for most visitors the practical answer to "how do I get around?" is simply: on foot, between two neighbouring stations. The city's main attractions, hotels and shops cluster around Hankyū Takarazuka Station and Takarazuka-Minamiguchi Station, and most of them are within walking distance of one another. If you plan your day around that central area, you may never need to board a bus or hail a taxi at all.
Rail: Your Main Way In and Out
Takarazuka sits on two competing rail corridors, and understanding the difference is the key to using the network well.
- JR Takarazuka Line (also known as the Fukuchiyama Line) runs from Osaka Station, with Rapid and Tambaji Rapid services. It is the faster of the two options from central Osaka.
- Hankyū Takarazuka Line runs from Umeda Station and offers frequent Express trains. It takes slightly longer than the JR route but is a little cheaper.
- A third approach uses the Hankyū Kobe Line to Nishinomiya-Kitaguchi, then a change to the Imazu Line. This is the route to choose if your destination is Takarazuka-Minamiguchi Station specifically.
From Shin-Osaka, the nearest Shinkansen station, there are direct Local trains to Takarazuka, or you can cut your journey time by taking a Rapid or Special Rapid two stops to Amagasaki and changing there to a Rapid or Tambaji Rapid train. JR also runs the Kōnotori Limited Express between Shin-Osaka and Fukuchiyama, with some trains continuing onward; from Osaka it is barely faster than the Rapid services, so it is mainly worth using if you hold a suitable rail pass or are arriving from the north.
If you are coming from south of Umeda, the JR Tōzai Line is a useful alternative, with good connections to most of Osaka's subway lines — particularly the Sennichimae and Sakaisuji Lines, which do not serve Umeda. In the mornings and evenings there are frequent direct Local and Rapid trains through to Takarazuka; during the daytime you will need to change at Amagasaki.
Tickets and Passes
JR services to Takarazuka are covered by the Japan Rail Pass, the Hokuriku Arch Pass, and JR West's Kansai Area Pass, Kansai WIDE Area Pass, Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass, Sanyō-San'in Area Pass, and Kansai-Hokuriku Area Pass. If you are travelling on a JR pass, the JR route is the natural choice; otherwise, compare the JR and Hankyū options for your particular journey, since the two operators price and time their services differently.
Buses and Other Public Transport
Takarazuka is not a city where you will rely heavily on buses for sightseeing, but buses do serve two useful roles. Hankyū Bus runs a limited direct service from Osaka-Itami Airport into Takarazuka, and long-distance overnight buses connect Tokyo (from Tokyo Station's Yaesu South Exit and from Shinjuku) with the city.
Note that Takarazuka Interchange, east of Takarazuka Station, is served by several long-distance bus routes running between Osaka and Western Japan — but these buses may not be used for travel between Takarazuka and Osaka, so they are not a substitute for the train on that leg.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
The source material describes car travel only in the context of airport transfers, giving approximate driving times from the region's airports. Taxis are therefore best thought of as a convenience for door-to-door airport or station transfers rather than a way to tour the city, whose centre is walkable anyway.
Getting In from the Airport
Takarazuka has no airport of its own, so your route in depends on which airport you land at.
- Osaka-Itami is the nearest airport, about 20 minutes away by car. There is a limited direct Hankyū Bus service to Takarazuka taking around 25 minutes for ¥240. A better option is usually to take the Monorail one stop to Hotarugaike and change there to the Hankyū Takarazuka Line — roughly 30 minutes for ¥420.
- Kobe Airport is a nearby domestic airport, about an hour away by car. From there, take the Port Liner to Sannomiya, then continue by train.
- Osaka-Kansai is the nearest international airport, about 1 hour 20 minutes away by car. From there, take the JR Kansai Airport Rapid train to Osaka and change to the JR Takarazuka Line; allow about 1 hour 50 minutes and ¥1710.
One Thing to Watch
If you are not staying at a local hotel, take note of the last train times at both Hankyū Takarazuka Station and Takarazuka-Minamiguchi Station — they are usually at or around 01:00. Miss them and you may find yourself with no transportation out of the city.
