Getting Around Kobe: A Practical Guide
Kobe benefits from an extensive public transport network that makes exploring the city straightforward for visitors. The city is well-served by rail, subway, tram, and bus services, with walking and cycling also playing important roles in how people move around. Most visitors will find that combining different transport modes—typically rail for longer journeys and walking for local exploration—works best for navigating the city.
Rail Networks
Three main railway lines cross Kobe in a west-east direction and form the backbone of transport in the city. These are the Hankyu, Hanshin, and Japan Rail (JR) lines. Each operates its own station in the central Sannomiya shopping district, and each provides access to different parts of the city and surrounding areas.
JR is often the most useful for visitors, especially those with a Japan Rail Pass. Shin-kaisoku (Special Rapid) trains stop at both Sannomiya and Kōbe stations and travel west towards Akashi and Himeji, or east towards Kyoto and Osaka. Local trains from either Sannomiya or Kōbe stations provide easy access to neighborhoods including Motomachi (near Nankin-machi and Meriken Park), Nada (the sake brewing district), Rokkomichi (for buses to Mt. Rokko), and Sumiyoshi (connecting to the Rokko Liner for Rokko Island).
The Hankyu and Hanshin lines are less essential for tourists but may be necessary for specific destinations. Hanshin Koshien Station provides access to Koshien Stadium, home of the Hanshin Tigers baseball team. Both lines also serve Shinkaichi, where you can transfer to the private Kobe Dentetsu line to reach the Arima Onsen hot-spring district.
Subway System
Kōbe has two subway lines. The Kaigan Line runs along the coast, and the Seishin-Yamate Line runs toward the mountains. Both lines are more expensive than ordinary trains and are unlikely to be essential for most visitors, except when connecting to Shin-Kōbe Station, the northernmost station in the city where the Sanyo Shinkansen bullet train stops.
The journey between Shin-Kobe and Sannomiya via subway costs ¥200. If you plan to explore Kobe using both subway lines, a one-day pass is available at ¥800 (¥400 for children). A combined subway and bus one-day pass costs ¥1,000 (¥500 for children).
Trams and Light Rail
The Port Liner light rail provides a convenient connection from Kobe Airport to Sannomiya Station, running approximately every 10 minutes. The journey takes 18 minutes and costs ¥330. When traveling from Sannomiya to the airport, ensure you board a train marked "Kobe Airport," as some trains head to the Kita Futo branch line instead.
Buses
Numerous public and private bus companies operate throughout Kobe with hundreds of routes. Most bus routes complement the rail network to create an effective intermodal transit system. Buses are particularly useful for reaching specific neighborhoods and attractions that may not be directly served by rail.
Taxis and After-Hours Transport
Taxis serve an important role in supplementing the rail and bus system, particularly after midnight when most rail lines cease to operate. They are also chosen by business travelers for convenience and by small groups looking for flexible routing.
Walking and Cycling
Walking is a practical way to explore Kobe's neighborhoods, particularly in the central areas around Sannomiya. Cycling is also common in the wider Kansai region, and bicycles can be combined with railway trips for longer journeys.
Ticketing and Passes
Several ticket options are available for visitors:
- ICOCA Card: A rechargeable card accepted on rail, subway, and bus networks throughout the Kansai area. Cards cost ¥2,000, which includes ¥1,500 in transportation credit and a ¥500 deposit. The balance and deposit can be refunded when the card is returned at any JR West Ticket Office.
- Kansai Thru Pass: Useful if you plan to travel beyond city limits.
- Japan Rail Pass: Provides free travel on JR lines for eligible foreign visitors.
- One-day subway pass: ¥800 for both subway lines (¥400 for children), or ¥1,000 for subway and bus combined (¥500 for children).
Getting from Kobe Airport to the City
Kobe Airport is located on reclaimed land in front of the harbor. The fastest and most convenient option for reaching the city center is the Port Liner light rail to Sannomiya Station, which runs every 10 minutes, takes 18 minutes, and costs ¥330.
From Sannomiya Station, you can access the Japan Rail (JR), Hanshin, Hankyu, and subway lines. If your destination is Shin-Kobe Station (for the bullet train), a short subway ride from Sannomiya costs ¥200.
Getting from Kansai International Airport
Kansai International Airport, the region's main international hub, is 70 km from Kobe. There are several options for reaching the city:
- Kaijo Access high-speed ferry: Departs from Kobe Airport every 45 minutes, taking 29 minutes to reach Kansai International Airport. The fare is ¥1,850, or ¥1,000 for foreign visitors.
- Airport Limousine bus: Direct service to Sannomiya Station or Rokko Island, taking 60–75 minutes. One-way fare is ¥2,000; round-trip is ¥3,000. The bus stop is located at position 6 near the airport.
- JR rapid trains: Take the JR Kanku Kaisoku rapid to Osaka Station, then change to the Shin-kaisoku Special Rapid running to Sannomiya or Kobe stations. This journey takes 90 minutes and costs ¥2,410.
Getting from Osaka Itami Airport
Osaka Itami Airport, which handles only domestic flights, is 30 km northeast of Kobe. Airport buses operate direct service to Sannomiya Station, taking 40 minutes and costing ¥1,050. This airport is convenient for visitors arriving on connecting flights from Tokyo.
Arriving by Train from Other Cities
Sannomiya Station is the central hub for most visitors, located 1.7 km south of Shin-Kobe Station. Sannomiya has a tourist information office with area maps and coupon books offering 10–20% discounts at many attractions.
From Tokyo: The nearest shinkansen station is Shin-Kobe. Nozomi trains reach Shin-Kobe in 2 hours, 50 minutes (¥14,670); Hikari trains take 3 hours, 20 minutes (¥14,270, free with Japan Rail Pass).
From Osaka: Multiple options connect Sannomiya to central Osaka. Hankyu express trains from Hankyu-Umeda and Hanshin express trains from Hanshin-Umeda reach Sannomiya in roughly 30 minutes (¥310). Hanshin Kaisoku Kyuko trains depart every 20 minutes from Namba Station, taking 45 minutes (¥400). JR Shin-kaisoku or Kaisoku trains from JR Osaka Station take 20–26 minutes (¥390, free with Japan Rail Pass).
From Kyoto: Shin-kaisoku trains reach Sannomiya in 50 minutes (¥1,050, free with Japan Rail Pass). Hankyu limited express trains take 70 minutes with one change at Juso (¥600), departing from Kawaramachi and Karasuma stations.
From Nara: Direct Kintetsu trains operate to Sannomiya via Namba every 20 minutes, taking 75 minutes (¥940).
Arriving by Bus
Kobe is served by highway buses from many parts of Japan. Most buses use the Sannomiya Bus Terminal, located adjacent to Sannomiya train station, though some operators use nearby locations. Long-distance buses connect Kobe to Tokyo, Nagoya, and regions throughout Chugoku, Shikoku, and Kyushu.
