Getting Around Isesaki
Isesaki is a city in southern Gunma Prefecture, on the northwestern edge of the Kantō Plain, with the Tone River running through its southern part. For a visitor, the practical picture is simple: the city is compact and centred on its main railway station, rail is the backbone of any trip in or out, and buses and taxis fill in the gaps. This guide covers the modes that exist, how they connect, and how to reach Isesaki from the airport.
Rail: the backbone of the network
Two railway operators serve Isesaki, and both converge on Isesaki Station, which is the natural base for exploring the city.
- JR East – Ryōmō Line: Isesaki is a stop on this line, which also serves Kunisada within the city.
- Tobu Railway – Tobu Isesaki Line: Isesaki is the terminating station of this line. Other stations on the line within the city include Sakaimachi, Gōshi, and Shin-Isesaki.
Because Isesaki is the terminus of the Tobu Isesaki Line, Tobu trains run through to the city rather than past it, which makes the Tobu route a straightforward option from Tokyo. The JR Ryōmō Line, by contrast, links Isesaki with neighbouring cities such as Maebashi and Takasaki, both of which are useful interchange points.
Buses and other public transport
Isesaki has no metro or tram network; public transport beyond the railways is by bus. Two kinds of bus service matter to visitors:
- Highway buses: JR Bus Kanto runs a daytime service from Shinjuku Station in Tokyo, with multiple departures every day. About one kilometre from Isesaki Station is Machikado Station Hirose, the city's major highway bus stop, where Nippon Chuo Bus operates a daily nighttime service from Kyoto and Osaka, and another from Sendai.
For a visitor, the highway bus is worth considering as an alternative to the train from Tokyo, and Machikado Station Hirose is the place to catch or alight from long-distance services.
Taxis and ride-hailing
In practice, taxis are the usual fallback for short trips that buses do not cover conveniently, and they are most easily found at the railway station.
Walkability
Isesaki is a compact city, and the area around Isesaki Station is walkable for day-to-day needs. However, the city covers a substantial area and several of its rail stations and attractions are spread out, so walking alone will not cover everything. A sensible approach is to walk around the central station district and use trains or buses for anything further afield.
Getting there from the airport
What it does provide is the practical route into the city from Tokyo, which is how most visitors will arrive after landing:
- By Tobu from Asakusa: Tobu trains depart from Asakusa Station. The fastest option is the all-reserved Ryomo limited express, changing at Ota station to a local service for the run to Isesaki. With a good connection this takes approximately two hours and costs ¥2160. Taking regular Tobu commuter services lowers the fare to ¥1160 but increases the trip to approximately three hours and requires more station transfers.
- By JR from Ueno: Commuter trains from Ueno take approximately 2½ hours at a cost of ¥2210. Take the JR Takasaki Line and change at Takasaki to the JR Ryomo Line.
- By shinkansen via Takasaki: It is also possible to use the Joetsu or Nagano Shinkansen from Tokyo to Takasaki and then change to the Ryomo Line; this takes about 1 hour 50 minutes at a cost of ¥4900. JR trips are fully covered if you have a Japan Rail Pass or JR East Rail Pass.
- By highway bus from Shinjuku: JR Bus Kanto's daytime service from Shinjuku Station takes about two hours and costs ¥1500, with multiple departures every day.
Practical tips for visitors
- Base yourself near Isesaki Station: it is the meeting point of both rail lines and the most convenient starting point for buses and taxis.
- If you hold a Japan Rail Pass or JR East Rail Pass, the JR route via Takasaki is fully covered, which can make it the most economical choice despite the higher cash fare.
- For the cheapest rail option from Tokyo, regular Tobu commuter services cost less but take longer and involve more transfers; the Ryomo limited express is the faster, simpler choice.
- Remember that Machikado Station Hirose, the main highway bus stop, is about one kilometre from Isesaki Station, so allow time to get between the two.
- Isesaki has a humid subtropical climate with warm summers and cold winters, so plan for the season when deciding how much you will walk.
