Getting Around Tajimi
Tajimi is a compact ceramics city in Gifu Prefecture, and its public transport is modest. The honest summary for visitors is that local buses exist but can be inconvenient, and the most practical ways to cover ground are by car or taxi. That said, the rail connections into and out of the city are excellent, and there is one tourist-oriented bus route that makes the main sights genuinely easy to reach.
Rail: Your Main Artery
Tajimi Station is the hub, served by two JR Central lines that connect the city to the wider region.
- JR Chūō Main Line — the obvious way in and out of Tajimi, running to Nagoya and onward. Local and Rapid trains are frequent, and the trip to Nagoya is short enough for a day trip. All Shinano Limited Express trains also stop at Tajimi; they are far pricier than the locals but useful if you are coming from the mountains to the north, such as Kiso-Fukushima, Shiojiri, Matsumoto, or Nagano.
- JR Taita Line — branches from Tajimi toward Mino-Ōta, where you can change for the Takayama Line (Gero, Takayama, and the Hida Limited Express) or the non-JR Nagaragawa Railway (Seki, Mino, Gujō). Some Taita Line trains continue to Gifu, which can be cheaper and sometimes faster than routing through Nagoya. One stop along the way, Unuma, puts you within walking distance of Inuyama Castle.
There is no metro or tram network in Tajimi — rail here means the two JR lines above.
Buses
Local buses run, but they are infrequent and not always convenient for sightseeing. Two things are worth knowing:
- Discounted local fares: during daytime hours, Tōtetsu Bus reduces some local bus fares, which makes short hops cheaper than you might expect.
- The Kikyō Bus Oribe Kankō Route: on weekends and holidays, this tourist route runs several times a day from Tajimi Station South Exit to Eihō-ji Temple, Tajimi Shudoin, Ceramics Park, and the Ceramic Art Museum, for a flat low fare. If you would rather not deal with regular buses, taxis, or a long walk, this is the best option for reaching the main sights.
Long-distance highway buses also serve the area, but they mostly feed into Nagoya rather than Tajimi itself; a few services stop directly at Tajimi Station North Exit or at the Tajimi Bus Stop on the Chūō Expressway, including overnight and daytime runs from Shinjuku and a service toward Iida and Magome. These are niche options — for most visitors, arriving by train via Nagoya is simpler.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are one of the recommended ways to get around Tajimi, precisely because the bus network is thin. If you want to visit sights outside the Oribe Kankō Route's coverage, or you are travelling with luggage or in a group, a taxi is the straightforward choice.
Walkability
Tajimi Station is walkable to parts of the city, but some attractions and transport links sit at the edge of comfortable walking range. The highway bus stop on the Chūō Expressway, for example, is a substantial walk from Tajimi Station, and the nearest local bus stop to it is also a walk away with infrequent service. Similarly, Unuma Station is a walk from Inuyama Castle. Within the central area around the station, walking is fine; for the ceramic sights, use the Oribe Kankō Route, a taxi, or a car.
Getting There from the Airport
The nearest international gateway is Nagoya-Centrair, and Tajimi can be reached from it by train in as little as an hour.
- Route via Kanayama: the best place to switch between the Meitetsu Line (from the airport) and the JR Chūō Line (to Tajimi) is Kanayama, which has a dedicated interchange gate. Note that most Shinano Limited Expresses do not stop at Kanayama, so do not count on those for the change.
- Japan Rail Pass holders: exchange your voucher at the Central Japan Travel Center in the Arrivals Lobby of the airport. Doing it there saves a detour to Nagoya Station, though you will still need a separate ticket for the Meitetsu Line portion.
- Nagoya-Komaki Airport (domestic only): in the unlikely event you use it, take the bus to Kachigawa Station, then continue to Tajimi on the JR Chūō Line.
Practical Summary
- Arrive and leave by JR from Tajimi Station — Chūō Main Line for Nagoya and points north, Taita Line for Mino-Ōta, Gifu, and the Takayama direction.
- For the ceramics sights on weekends and holidays, take the Kikyō Bus Oribe Kankō Route from the station's South Exit.
- For everything else around town, rely on taxis or a car; local buses are infrequent.
- From Centrair, ride the Meitetsu Line to Kanayama and change to the JR Chūō Line there.
