Getting around Kōriyama

Kōriyama sits in the centre of Fukushima Prefecture, which makes it an important transportation hub and the nexus of several railway lines and expressways. It functions as a commercial center for the prefecture and is the third largest conurbation in the Tōhoku region. For a visitor, that means the city is easy to reach and easy to use as a base — most of what you need is anchored on Kōriyama Station, with the downtown area extending to the west of it.

Rail: the backbone of the city

Kōriyama Station is the central station for the city and the natural starting point for almost any trip. It is served by JR East, and several lines radiate from it:

Because these lines converge here, Kōriyama works well as a jumping-off point for day trips around Fukushima and into the wider Tōhoku region. Note that the city itself has no airport and no metro or tram system — rail here means the JR network above, so plan your movements around the station.

Buses and other public transport

Kōriyama has good bus networks linking it to other places, and buses are also the way to cover ground within the city away from the rail lines. Highway buses connect Kōriyama with Tokyo and with Narita Airport, which makes coach travel a practical alternative to the train for long-distance journeys. For local journeys, buses fill in the gaps between the station and the parts of the city that the railways do not reach.

Taxis and ride-hailing

Taxis are available in the city and are a straightforward option for short trips, late arrivals, or reaching destinations away from the station and bus routes. As with most Japanese cities, taxis are metered and can be picked up at ranks, typically around the station.

Walkability

The downtown area extends to the west of Kōriyama Station, so the central district is compact enough to explore on foot once you arrive. The Abukuma River flows through downtown Kōriyama, and the city's core sights and commercial streets are clustered in this central zone. For anything beyond the centre, though, you will want to use the rail or bus network rather than rely on walking.

Getting in from the airport

Kōriyama does not have its own airport. The nearest one is Fukushima Airport, located in Sukagawa city, about 20 km to the south of Kōriyama. Fukushima Airport has daily flights to Okinawa, Osaka and Sapporo, along with less frequent international flights to Seoul and Shanghai. From the airport, you continue into Kōriyama by road or rail connections.

If you are arriving from further afield, note that buses link Kōriyama directly with Narita Airport, which can save you from negotiating a transfer in Tokyo. By rail, the Tōhoku Shinkansen is the fastest way to reach Kōriyama from Tokyo, and it also connects the city with other major cities in Tōhoku such as Fukushima and Sendai. The Tōhoku Main Line offers a slower, cheaper alternative along a similar route. From the west, the West Ban'etsu Line connects Kōriyama with Niigata via the Mount Bandai region.

By car

Kōriyama sits on the Tōhoku Expressway, with interchanges at Kōriyama and Kōriyama Minami, and the Ban-etsu Expressway also serves the area with interchanges including Kōriyama-higashi. Several national routes pass through the city as well. Driving is therefore a viable option for reaching Kōriyama and for exploring the surrounding region, though within the central city the rail and bus network is usually the simpler choice.
