Getting Around Ichinomiya
Ichinomiya sits roughly halfway between Nagoya and Gifu, which makes it easy to reach and easy to use as a base for exploring the wider region. The city is served by two rail operators — JR and Meitetsu — and the practical way to move around is to pick the line that matches your destination and treat the stations as your anchor points.
Rail: JR and Meitetsu
Two rail networks serve Ichinomiya, and knowing which one you want is the single most useful thing to sort out before you travel.
- JR — the JR Tokaido line connects Nagoya with Owari-Ichinomiya, the city's JR station. This is the straightforward option if you are coming from Nagoya.
- Meitetsu — the Meitetsu Nagoya line and the Meitetsu Bisai line also serve the city, giving you a second, separate rail option alongside JR.
Because the two operators run separate networks, a ticket or pass bought for one generally will not cover the other. Plan your journey around a single operator where you can, and check which station is closest to where you actually want to go before you set out.
Buses and Other Public Transport
Beyond the rail lines, local public transport fills in the gaps for reaching places that are not on a station. As with the trains, the useful approach is to identify your destination first and then work out which service gets you closest — rather than assuming a single network will cover everything. If you are staying near a JR or Meitetsu station, that station will usually be your most convenient starting point for any onward local journey.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are a practical fallback for short trips, late arrivals, or destinations away from the rail corridors. They are particularly worth keeping in mind if your plans take you somewhere the trains and buses do not reach conveniently. For anything time-sensitive — a train to catch, a specific appointment — a taxi removes the guesswork that comes with connections.
Walkability
Ichinomiya is a compact enough city that walking works well for the immediate area around whichever station you arrive at. The most sensible pattern for a visitor is to use rail for the longer legs between Nagoya, Gifu and Ichinomiya itself, and then walk for the final stretch once you are in the city. If your destination is some distance from a station, though, plan on a bus or taxi rather than assuming you can cover it on foot.
Getting There from the Airport
The natural gateway for Ichinomiya is Nagoya, and the region's main airport feeds into the same rail system that serves the city. The practical route is to travel from the airport into Nagoya first, then continue to Ichinomiya by rail — either the JR Tokaido line to Owari-Ichinomiya or one of the Meitetsu lines. Because Ichinomiya sits roughly halfway between Nagoya and Gifu, the Nagoya connection is the key step: once you are in Nagoya, the onward trip to Ichinomiya is short and straightforward.
By Road
If you are driving, Ichinomiya is accessible from the Toumei, Meishin, and Tokai-Hokoriku expressways. This makes the city reachable by car from several directions, which is useful if your itinerary includes places in the surrounding region that are awkward to reach by rail.
Practical Tips
- Decide first whether your destination is on the JR side or the Meitetsu side — the two are separate systems.
- Use rail for the long legs between Nagoya, Gifu and Ichinomiya, and walk once you are in the city.
- Keep taxis in mind for short hops, late arrivals, or anywhere the rail and bus networks do not conveniently reach.
- If you are flying in, route through Nagoya and pick up the onward train from there.
- Drivers can approach the city via the Toumei, Meishin, or Tokai-Hokoriku expressways.
