Getting Around Khorramabad

Khorramabad sits in a scenic valley in the Zagros Mountains, and its layout reflects that geography: the city spreads along the valley floor, with the historic core clustered around the central citadel rock. For a visitor, this means most of the places you'll want to see are within a compact, walkable area, while longer hops across town are best handled by taxi or bus.

Rail, Metro and Tram

Khorramabad currently has no metro, tram, or working passenger rail service. A railway line to the city is under construction, but it is unclear when it will open to passenger traffic. Until then, the nearest railway station is in Dorud, roughly 65 km east of Khorramabad. If you are arriving in the region by train, plan on covering that final stretch by road — a taxi or intercity bus from Dorud is the practical option.

Buses and Public Transport

Public transport in Khorramabad is road-based. City buses serve the main urban corridors, and intercity buses connect the city with other destinations in Lorestan province and beyond. As with most Iranian cities, tickets are inexpensive and are typically bought on board or at terminal counters rather than through an online pass system. If you plan to use buses regularly, it is worth asking at your hotel or at the bus terminal about local fare payment, since practices can vary.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis are the most flexible way to get around Khorramabad, particularly for reaching sites outside the immediate centre. Shared and private taxis are both common, and you can usually flag one down on the street or find them at established stands. Ride-hailing apps used elsewhere in Iran generally work here too, which can be convenient if you don't speak Persian — you can set your destination in the app rather than explaining it to the driver.

Walking

Walking is a genuinely useful way to explore central Khorramabad. The city's best-known landmark, Falak-ol-Aflak Castle, sits on a rocky outcrop at the base of the valley, and the historic core around it — including the Sasanian-era Shapuri Bridge and the Brick Minaret to the south — can be reached on foot from the centre. Be prepared for some uneven ground and slopes near the castle, and note that the city's mild, semi-humid Mediterranean climate brings substantial rain in spring and winter, so carry a layer and an umbrella in those seasons.

Getting from the Airport into the City

Khorramabad Airport lies just 3 km south of the city proper, making the transfer into town short and straightforward. Taxis are the obvious choice and should be readily available at the airport; given the very short distance, the ride to the centre is quick. Because the airport is so close to the city, there is little practical need to arrange anything elaborate in advance — but it is still worth confirming the fare or using a ride-hailing app if you want a fixed price.
