Getting Around Baghdad
Baghdad is served by several forms of public and private transport. While the city does have buses and taxis, visitors should be aware that security remains a consideration when travelling around. Many high-end hotels provide their own transport options, including some with armoured vehicles. Walking is possible in certain areas, particularly in and around the old city, though it is not practical for all destinations.
Public Buses
Baghdad has an extensive bus network that serves the city. However, maps and route information are not readily available in English, which can make navigating the system challenging for visitors unfamiliar with the city. The buses are generally affordable but the network is described as chaotic. If you plan to use buses, it is advisable to seek local guidance or advice from your hotel regarding specific routes and stops.
Taxis and Hotel Transport
Taxis are plentiful throughout Baghdad and are quite cheap to use, making them a practical option for getting around the city. Many visitors opt to use transport arranged through their accommodation. High-end hotels often provide their own transport services, and some offer armoured vehicles for guests who wish to arrange this additional security measure.
Walking
Walking is possible in parts of Baghdad, especially in and around the old city. However, it is not a viable option for travelling across the entire city or to all destinations. Visitors interested in exploring on foot should focus on specific areas and seek local advice about safe walking routes.
Cycling
While cycling is not uncommon among local residents, there is next to no infrastructure to support cyclists. This makes cycling impractical for most visitors.
Rail, Metro and Tram Services
Baghdad does not have an operational metro or tram network. The city is served by the national railway system, but this is focused on intercity connections rather than urban transport within Baghdad itself.
Getting from the Airport to the City
Baghdad International Airport is located approximately 16 kilometres west of the city centre. The airport has three interlinked terminals with standard facilities including banks, money exchange, ATMs, mobile phone companies, restaurants, and a hotel. It is easy to walk between the terminals both on the landside and airside.
When departing Baghdad by air, be prepared for significant security processing. Entrance to the airport grounds, located several miles from the terminal building, requires vehicle and passenger screening. Security checkpoints can take between two to three hours to process through. Additionally, frequent sandstorms in the area can occasionally cause flights to be diverted or turned away due to limited runway visibility.
