Getting Around Nizamabad
Nizamabad is a city in Telangana, India, and getting around it is generally cheap and straightforward. The city has no metro or tram system, so visitors rely on a mix of auto-rickshaws, city buses, shared jeeps, taxis and their own two feet. The sections below cover each option in turn, along with how to reach the city from the nearest airports.
Auto-Rickshaws: The Main Way to Move Around
Auto-rickshaws are the primary mode of transport for short trips within Nizamabad. They are easy to hail from the streets and from markets, which makes them a convenient default for getting between neighbourhoods or back to your accommodation.
- Fares are inexpensive for short hops and higher for longer cross-city rides.
- Insist on the meter or agree on a price before you set off.
- Luggage space is limited, so they suit passengers more than bags.
Buses and Other Public Transport
TSRTC city buses are the cheapest way to get around. They cover the major neighbourhoods and the bus station, and urban fares are very low, varying by distance and vehicle type. The trade-off is speed: buses stop frequently, so they are slower than a rickshaw or taxi. They remain useful for budget travel and for areas that taxis serve poorly.
Shared jeeps also provide cheap local connections within the city, with fares in the same low range as city buses.
For intercity travel, Nizamabad Junction railway station sits on the Secunderabad–Manmad route, with regular services toward Secunderabad and Hyderabad and onward connections to Mumbai and Nagpur. Frequent TSRTC and private intercity buses run to Hyderabad (MGBS and Secunderabad), Nanded and other regional destinations.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
App-based taxis such as Ola and Uber, along with local metered taxis, operate in and around Nizamabad, but availability is lower than in Hyderabad. Fares within town are modest, with higher charges for longer trips. They are a good choice for air-conditioned rides and for airport transfers.
- Because app availability can be limited, pre-booking a private taxi is more reliable for early-morning or late-night intercity travel.
- For early departures to nearby places such as Dichpalli, arrange a private taxi in advance rather than relying on hailing one.
- Renting a scooter is a suggested option if you want flexibility for day trips outside town.
Walking
Walking is practical for short trips in the central market area, where the streets are busy and distances between shops and stalls are short. For longer journeys across the city, one of the motorised options above will be more comfortable.
Getting In from the Airport
Nizamabad has no airport of its own. The nearest major airport is Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad (HYD), and a nearer regional option is Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Airport in Nanded (NDC), which has limited flights.
- From Hyderabad: buses and trains to Nizamabad take roughly three to four hours. A direct taxi is faster and more convenient but costs considerably more, and the drive takes a similar few hours.
- From Nanded: a bus takes roughly three to four hours at low cost, while a taxi is quicker and more expensive.
Whichever airport you use, a pre-booked private taxi is the most dependable way to cover the final leg, especially if you are arriving late at night or leaving before dawn.
Practical Notes for Visitors
- Transport in Nizamabad is cheap, and daily costs for a visitor are modest.
- Ola availability is limited, so plan ahead for time-sensitive trips.
- The monsoon (June–September) can disrupt local transport through heavy rain and muddy roads.
- Winter (November–February) is dry and pleasant, and the best time to visit.
