Orientation
Mahbubnagar (also spelled Mahabubnagar) is a city in the Indian state of Telangana and the headquarters of its district. It sits roughly 98 km from Hyderabad, which makes the state capital the main gateway for most visitors arriving by air or long-distance rail. The city itself is compact enough that you will spend most of your time in a fairly small central area, with the bus stand and the main railway station as the two practical anchors for getting in and out.
How Visitors Get Around the City
Getting around Mahbubnagar is mostly a matter of road transport. The city is well known for its auto-rickshaw culture — it ranks among the largest cities in South India by number of auto-rickshaws — so three-wheelers are the default way to cover short hops. For longer or more comfortable trips within and around the city, taxis and app-based cabs are the alternative. Walking works well for the immediate surroundings of the bus stand and station areas, but the city is spread over a wide area, so most visitors will combine walking with a rickshaw or cab for anything beyond a few blocks.
Rail Network
Mahbubnagar is served by rail, and the city has several railway stations: Mahbubnagar Main Station, Mahbubnagar Town, Yenugonda Station and Divitipally Station. For a visitor, the main station is the one to remember — it is the principal stop for arriving from and departing toward Hyderabad and other destinations. If you are staying in a particular part of town, it is worth checking which of the other stations is closest to your accommodation, since they serve different neighbourhoods.
Mahbubnagar does not have a metro or tram system. The nearest metro network is in Hyderabad, so rail travel here means the conventional Indian Railways network rather than an urban rapid-transit system.
Buses and Public Transport
The city's public bus network is operated by TSRTC (Telangana State Road Transport Corporation), with services running from Mahbubnagar bus station to various destinations. The main bus stand is the hub — listed as "Mahbubnagar Bus Stand" — and it is the place to go for both local and long-distance buses.
The most useful route for visitors is the long-distance service between Mahbubnagar and Hyderabad's MGBS (Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station), operated under TSRTC's Hyderabad Long Distance Buses division. Buses run in both directions throughout the day, with an early first departure and services continuing late into the night, so you have considerable flexibility in planning a trip to or from the capital. There is also a stop referred to simply as "Mahabubnagar stop" within Mahbubnagar Urban Mandal.
For schedules, fares and route maps, the Moovit app is a practical tool — it publishes timetables and arrival times for the Mahbubnagar–Hyderabad services. Tickets are bought on board or at the bus station in the usual way for state-run buses.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Beyond buses and auto-rickshaws, taxis are available for point-to-point travel. App-based ride-hailing is the most convenient option for visitors who want a fixed price and a door-to-door trip, particularly for the run to Hyderabad or the airport. For shorter city trips, hailing an auto-rickshaw directly is usually the quickest option given how common they are.
Walkability
Walking is realistic around the immediate vicinity of the bus stand and the main railway station, where you will find the usual cluster of shops, eateries and transport connections. As a general rule, though, Mahbubnagar is a spread-out city rather than a pedestrian one, so plan on using a rickshaw or cab for anything more than a short stroll, especially in the heat.
Getting There from the Airport
Mahbubnagar has no commercial airport of its own. A Mahbubnagar Airport has been proposed, but as of the latest surveys multiple locations were found unsuitable and alternative sites — including Devarakadra — were still under review by the Airports Authority of India. Until such a facility exists, the practical airport for the city is Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad, roughly 86 km away.
From that airport, your options are a taxi or ride-hailing car for the direct journey, or a combination of transport into Hyderabad and then a TSRTC long-distance bus or a train onward to Mahbubnagar. The direct road transfer is the simplest choice if you are arriving with luggage; the bus-and-rail combination is the more economical one, using MGBS as the connecting point for buses or the city's railway stations for trains.
Practical Tips
- Use the main Mahbubnagar railway station for long-distance rail; the other stations (Town, Yenugonda, Divitipally) serve specific neighbourhoods.
- For Hyderabad, the TSRTC long-distance bus from Mahbubnagar bus stand to MGBS is the workhorse option, with frequent services through the day and night.
- Check Moovit for live bus schedules and fares before you set out.
- Auto-rickshaws are plentiful and are the easiest way to cover short distances in the city.
- Allow for the roughly 86 km transfer from Rajiv Gandhi International Airport if you are flying in.
