Getting Around Khammam

Khammam is a city in the Khammam district of Telangana, and the district headquarters. It sits on the western side of the Munneru river, a tributary of the Krishna. For a visitor, the practical picture is simple: this is a city where auto rickshaws do most of the work, city buses cover the main roads, and taxis are something you arrange for out-of-town trips rather than flag down on the street. There is no metro or tram system here, and no airport in the city itself.

Auto Rickshaws: The Main Way to Get Around

Auto rickshaws are the primary transport vehicles available to the public for getting around Khammam. They are the default choice for short hops and for reaching areas the buses do not serve.

Because fares outside the main routes are negotiated, it is worth agreeing on the price before you set off.

City Buses

Khammam has newly introduced city buses that run on the main roads and also connect to some suburban villages outside the city. They are a cheap option, but service is limited: there are relatively few buses and the schedule is quite erratic. Treat them as a useful backup on main corridors rather than something to build a tight itinerary around.

Taxis and Car Hire

Taxis are quite rare in Khammam and are generally used only if you have plans to visit other places in Khammam district. If you need a car, the practical route is to approach one of the travel agencies near the main bus stand, which allow you to hire a car. There is no mention of app-based ride-hailing operating in the city, so plan on autos, buses, or a hired car instead.

Walkability

The source material does not describe Khammam as a walking-oriented city, and the practical guidance it offers centres on autos and buses for getting around. Plan to use a vehicle for most trips, particularly to internal areas, and treat walking as a way to cover short stretches near where you are staying rather than as a primary way to cross the city.

Rail Connections

Khammam railway station (station code: KMT) lies on the main north–south national train line, which means it is a well-connected route with plenty of trains. There are trains every hour to Vijayawada and to Warangal during peak times.

There is no metro or tram network in Khammam; rail here means the national train line serving KMT.

Buses Into and Out of Khammam

Khammam is very well connected by bus to Hyderabad, Bhadrachalam, Kothagudem, Palawancha, Wyra and Suryapet. From these destinations you can generally get a bus every 15 minutes or so. There are also buses to Warangal and Vijayawada, though these are quite rarely used because the rail connection is better.

Common road routes include:

Getting to Khammam from Outside

Khammam has no airport of its own, so the practical approach is to arrive by rail or road. The nearest major rail hub is Vijayawada, which offers the best onward connections to major cities across the country. By road, Suryapet on National Highway 9 is a major connecting point, especially for travellers arriving from Hyderabad; those coming from Vijayawada can reach Khammam via Kodad on National Highway 9. Other road connections run via Warangal and via Bhadrachalam through Kothagudem and Palawancha. Hyderabad is the state capital and the largest city in the region, and Khammam is linked to it by both road and a longer rail journey.
