Getting Around Dhanbad

Dhanbad is a busy, spread-out city in Jharkhand, and getting around it is mostly a matter of road transport. There is no metro or tram system here, so visitors rely on buses, auto-rickshaws, taxis and ride-hailing apps. The good news is that almost everything is cheap and easy to arrange; the challenge is that routes and schedules are informal, so a little local asking goes a long way.

Rail: Dhanbad Junction

Dhanbad Junction railway station is the city's main rail gateway and the anchor of its transport network. The Dhanbad rail division is the largest revenue generator among Indian Railways' divisions, which reflects how central the railways are to the city and the surrounding coalfields. Long-distance trains connect Dhanbad with major cities including Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, Ranchi, Patna and beyond, so many visitors arrive by train rather than by air. If you are coming from Kolkata, convenient options include the Howrah–Ranchi Shatabdi Express, the Black Diamond Express and the Coalfield Express. For timings and bookings, check with Indian Railways.

Buses and Public Transport

City buses run routes within Dhanbad and connect to nearby towns, and they are very cheap. Fares are typically in the region of ₹10–₹50 depending on distance, paid in cash to the conductor when you board. Buses generally operate from around 6:00 AM until roughly 9:00–10:00 PM. The main hub is Bartand Bus Stop, which serves both local and long-distance buses.

A few practical cautions: routes are informal, detailed maps are generally not available, and schedules are not fixed, so it is best to ask locally or check with conductors. Buses are often crowded, and their high steps and narrow entrances make them difficult for travellers with mobility challenges.

For longer journeys, most important cities and towns of Jharkhand, Bengal and Bihar have bus links with Dhanbad. Luxury Volvo buses ply between Dhanbad and Kolkata and between Dhanbad and Ranchi. The large bus station sits about 2 km from the railway station. Dhanbad is just off the Grand Trunk Road (NH 2), and you can drive in from Govindpur or Rajganj; the city is also connected via Chas and Bokaro Steel City to Ramgarh, and via Chas and Muri to Ranchi.

Auto-Rickshaws

Auto-rickshaws are the most prevalent form of hired direct transport in Dhanbad and are easily hailed on the street. They are also available until late at night. Agree on your destination and fare before you set off, because meters are rarely used. Typical fares run around ₹50 for short trips and ₹200–₹300 for longer rides. Cash is standard, though many drivers also accept UPI (which requires an Indian bank account). Auto-rickshaws are also a popular link with neighbouring towns and the coalfields, but these services are generally overcrowded; autos are more economical than the older trekkers they have largely replaced.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Traditional metered taxis are less common here than in larger Indian cities. Hired cars and taxis are available at the railway station around the clock, and pre-paid taxi counters at Dhanbad Junction offer fixed fares to city locations — a straightforward option when you arrive. Private taxis and chauffeur-driven car rentals can also be arranged through hotels or local agencies, which is useful for day trips.

For app-based travel, Ola is the main ride-sharing service and is more widely used than Uber in Dhanbad. Fares are calculated in the app and journeys are tracked, and drivers are registered. Before boarding, confirm the driver's name and the vehicle registration against the app details.

Car and Two-Wheeler Rental

Self-drive car rentals are not widely available, and self-driving is not recommended for tourists given local traffic conditions. Cars with drivers, arranged through local travel agencies and hotels, are the practical alternative. Motorcycle and scooter rentals are limited; you will need a valid driving licence, plus an International Driving Permit if you are a foreign visitor, and helmets are mandatory for both rider and pillion.

Walking and Cycling

Dhanbad is not an especially walkable city. Sidewalks are often uneven or absent, so pedestrians end up walking alongside traffic. There are no dedicated bike lanes, and cycling on main roads is hazardous because of congestion; there are no bike-share programmes and bicycle rentals are very limited. Birsa Munda park offers safe walking space, but there are no organised walking tours, so self-guided walks require caution. On foot or by bicycle, avoid busy highways, congested market streets and industrial zones, where heavy vehicle traffic and operational hazards are a real concern.

Driving Conditions

Traffic drives on the left. Road quality varies: main roads are decent, while inner-city lanes are congested and irregularly surfaced. Expect frequent honking and erratic lane changes, with a mix of vehicles, pedestrians and even wildlife. Parking is difficult in commercial areas and markets, and night driving on rural highways is risky because of poor lighting.

Getting There from the Airport

Dhanbad has an airstrip for small planes, but no commercial airport of its own. The nearest commercial airport is at Ranchi, about 170 km away. Other options include Gaya (around 217 km), Kolkata (around 250 km) and Patna (around 325 km). From any of these, the practical way into Dhanbad is by train or by road: long-distance trains serve Dhanbad Junction, and buses as well as private taxis and chauffeur-driven cars connect the city with the wider region. Once you arrive at Dhanbad Junction, pre-paid taxis, app-based rides and auto-rickshaws are all available to take you onward into the city.
