Getting Around Mirzapur
Mirzapur is a city in Uttar Pradesh, set where the Vindhya mountains meet the Indo-Gangetic Plain. Many of its best-known sights — the waterfalls and green hill country — lie out in the countryside rather than in the city itself, so a visitor's transport choices usually split into two questions: how to move through town, and how to reach the surrounding attractions. Local transport is inexpensive but loosely organised, so a little planning goes a long way.
Cycle Rickshaws and Auto-Rickshaws
Cycle rickshaws are widely described as the best way to get around inside the city, and auto-rickshaws are the other mainstay of local travel. Auto-rickshaws are also the usual choice for reaching the Vindhyachal temple.
- Fares are negotiable and generally inexpensive; you can hire a rickshaw to tour the whole city.
- Meters are rarely used, so agree on the fare with the driver before you set off.
- Auto-rickshaws cannot reach the narrow lanes (gullies) of the old city, including the areas where carpet weavers work — for those, walk.
Walking
Walking is a practical and recommended way to explore Mirzapur's narrow lanes, particularly the quarters where carpet weaving takes place, which rickshaws cannot enter. Given the city's setting at the foot of the Vindhyan range, the surrounding scenery is part of the appeal, and the monsoon months (July–August) are considered the best time to enjoy it.
Rail
Mirzapur has its own railway station and sits on a major railway line, so regular services connect it with much of India. It is a small but important junction, used by visitors heading to Vindhyachal, Chunar and the wider Mirzapur region, and trains to major north Indian cities pass through.
- Direct trains reach Mirzapur from cities including Agra, Varanasi, Allahabad (Prayagraj), Lucknow, Jammu, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Gaya, Surat, Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore.
- Mirzapur lies midway on the New Delhi–Kolkata railway route. If you are coming from outside India, a common approach is to land at New Delhi or Kolkata and continue by train.
- If no direct train suits you, transfer via Varanasi or Prayagraj; daily suburban and express trains stop at Mirzapur.
- There is no metro or tram network in Mirzapur — rail here means the national railway.
Buses and Other Public Transport
Uttar Pradesh State Transport and Regional Transport Office bus services operate from the Mirzapur bus stand, with routes to various cities across Uttar Pradesh. Regular bus services link Mirzapur with key state cities, and buses are an affordable option.
- Most buses arrive at central bus stations, where local transport is available onward.
- Public buses and private cabs to outlying attractions are available at reasonable rates.
- For transport queries, the Regional Transport Officer, Mirzapur, can be contacted on 05442 245964; the department's website is www.uptransport.org.
Taxis and Private Cabs
Private taxis are the best way to visit the waterfalls and other outlying sights — Vindham Fall, Sirsi Fall, Rajdari and Lakhiniya Dari among them — which sit some distance from the city. Taxis are relatively affordable, but agree the price with the driver in advance.
- It can be difficult to find a private cab or taxi within Mirzapur, as the sector is not well organised and service reliability is not guaranteed. Your hotel can usually arrange a taxi for you.
- Another option is to hire a private taxi from Varanasi or Allahabad (Prayagraj) if you are coming from there, and use it for your onward trips.
- Direct private taxis can also be arranged from nearby hubs such as Varanasi and Lucknow.
Getting In from the Airport
Mirzapur has no airport of its own, so air travellers arrive via a neighbouring city and continue by land.
- The nearest airports are Babatpur Airport, Varanasi, and Bamrauli Airport, Allahabad (Prayagraj). Direct flights from New Delhi are available to both.
- From Varanasi, the onward journey to Mirzapur is by road or rail; a taxi is a straightforward option, and you can also hire a private taxi in Varanasi for your whole stay.
- From Prayagraj, onward travel is likewise by land transport, with buses and trains among the choices.
- If you are flying into India from abroad, landing at New Delhi or Kolkata and taking a train is a practical route, since Mirzapur sits on the New Delhi–Kolkata line.
Practical Notes
- Carry cash in Indian rupees. Cards are accepted only in large stores, and ATMs can be unreliable.
- Hindi is the main language; basic English is understood in hotels and at tourist spots.
- Drink only bottled water and avoid ice in drinks.
- Light natural fabrics suit the climate; carry a scarf or shawl to cover shoulders and knees for temple visits.
- Remove your shoes when entering homes and temples, and greet people with "Namaste".
- Mirzapur is known for handmade carpets, and bargaining is customary.
