Getting Around Lucknow
Lucknow is a sprawling city where places of interest are spread across considerable distances, so visitors are advised to use motorised transit rather than relying on walking alone. The city offers a variety of transport options to suit different budgets and preferences.
Metro
The Lucknow Metro consists of a single line running north to south through the city. This line connects the city centre to several key destinations, including Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport and Charbagh railway station, making it a convenient option for visitors arriving by air or rail.
Taxis and Rickshaws
Taxis and rickshaws are available throughout Lucknow and can be found in areas from Gomti Nagar to Hazratganj. However, taxi and rickshaw drivers tend to be persistent in their solicitation, and few speak fluent English, which may make it challenging to reach locations outside the main tourist areas.
Two types of rickshaws operate in the city:
- Motorised rickshaws (CNG buses and auto-rickshaws): These are available throughout the city for getting around.
- Cycle rickshaws: These traditional vehicles produce less pollution and provide employment to local operators, making them a more sustainable choice if you have time and are comfortable with slower travel.
Hired Cars
Many car rental companies operate in Lucknow. If you choose to hire a car, it is strongly recommended that you hire one with a local driver, as traffic conditions can be dangerous for visitors unfamiliar with local driving practices.
Buses
Buses operate in Lucknow, though specific details about routes, fares, and schedules are limited in available visitor information. CNG buses are mentioned as an option for travelling around the city.
Rail Network
Lucknow is served by several major railway stations, making it well-connected to other cities across India. The main stations are Charbagh, Lucknow Junction, Lucknow City, and Gomti Nagar. Getting from the Airport
Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport is Lucknow's main airport, served by daily flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Patna, as well as direct flights to several other cities including Bangalore, Sharjah, Jeddah, Muscat, Dehradun, Indore, Pune, Goa, and Varanasi.
The most convenient way to reach the city centre from the airport is via the Metro's Red Line, which connects directly to Charbagh railway station in the city centre. This provides a straightforward, modern transport link without the unpredictability of negotiating with taxi drivers.
Walkability
Walking is not recommended as the primary means of getting around Lucknow due to the large distances between attractions. While cycle rickshaws and other local transport are available in areas such as Hazratganj, visitors should plan on using motorised transport for most journeys within the city.
