First, know which Loni you're visiting
There is more than one place called Loni, and the practical travel advice differs sharply between them. This guide covers the two most commonly visited: Loni in Ghaziabad district, Uttar Pradesh, an industrial town within the National Capital Region just outside Delhi; and Loni in Ahmednagar district, Maharashtra, a smaller town in the district's sugarcane belt. Check your destination before you plan your transport, because the two have very different connections.
Getting around Loni, Uttar Pradesh
Loni (Ghaziabad) sits close to Delhi and functions as a logistics link between Uttar Pradesh's industrial zones and the capital. Its transport is a mix of local buses, suburban trains, and app-based taxis and autos.
- Buses: The cheapest way to move around. Bus routes connect parts of the city and neighbouring tehsils, but services are often overcrowded. Avoid travelling between roughly 7–10 AM and 5–8 PM, when peak-hour crowding is worst; daytime is more comfortable.
- Suburban trains: Loni station handles suburban trains from Delhi and Ghaziabad, and the train is a useful way to sidestep highway congestion on NH-24 and NH-119. Other stations with passenger traffic nearby include Anand Vihar Terminal, Delhi Junction, New Delhi, Sarai Rohilla and Ghaziabad.
- Taxis and autos: Auto-rickshaws and taxis are the main alternative to public transport. Uber and Ola operate reliably here, with fares known in advance; you can pay by card in the app or in cash.
- Walking: Many streets lack sidewalks and traffic is heavy, so walking is not comfortable everywhere. Central shopping streets are the walkable exception.
- Key node: Loni Tiraha is the major transport intersection and commercial hub, with street markets and eateries, and is a convenient area to base yourself.
Getting around Loni, Maharashtra
Loni (Ahmednagar) is a small town with no airport or railway station of its own. Local movement is simple and short.
- Autos and cabs: Auto-rickshaws are the main way to get around, and most destinations within town are within 15–20 minutes. Autos and cabs are also available on arrival at the main stop.
- Buses: Daily AC bus services connect Loni to Pune, Aurangabad and Ahmednagar. Coach types vary by corridor — AC Sleeper on the Pune route (overnight) and AC Seater on the Aurangabad and Ahmednagar routes — with amenities such as AC, charging ports, a water bottle and a blanket. The single verified boarding and dropping point is "Loni Main Stop" in the centre, reachable by auto-rickshaw, including from the Pravara Institute of Medical Sciences campus. Operators advertise live GPS tracking, CCTV, fire-suppression systems, women-only seating on select routes and 24/7 WhatsApp support, though these are company claims rather than independently verified.
- Rail and air connections: The nearest railway station is Ahmednagar, reached by road; the nearest major airport is Pune, also reached by road, with Aurangabad cited as an alternative connection.
- Booking: Festival periods and weekends increase demand, so book bus tickets in advance.
Reaching the city from the airport
For Loni (Ghaziabad), Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) is the main hub. You can reach the town by taxi or bus, but allow extra time: traffic at the city entrance can cause delays at peak hours.
For Loni (Ahmednagar), there is no local airport. Pune Airport is the nearest major option, reached by road, and Aurangabad is also cited as a connection point. From either, continue by road or bus to Loni Main Stop.
Practical tips
- Carry cash in Indian Rupees for markets and small shops, even where app payments work.
- In Loni (Ghaziabad), Hindi is the main language, with basic English in hotels. Smog is possible from October to January, so a mask is advisable, and drink bottled water.
- In Loni (Maharashtra), October to February is the most comfortable season. April and May regularly exceed 40°C, so travel in the early morning or evening during the hot months; bus schedules continue through the June–September monsoon.
