Getting Around Kushinagar
Kushinagar is a compact pilgrimage town in Uttar Pradesh, and the good news for visitors is that its main sights sit close enough together to be explored on foot. The archaeological sites, the museum and the newer temples are all located within a short distance of one another, so you can comfortably plan a day of walking between them rather than relying on vehicles.
Walking
Walking is the most practical way to cover the core pilgrimage area. The Parinirvana Temple, the Parinirvana Stupa just behind it, the Matha Kuar Shrine at the western end of the complex, and the surrounding ruins, brick structures and monasteries are all grouped together. Several museums, meditation parks and temples built in the architectural styles of various Asian countries are also part of this same cluster.
- Wear comfortable shoes and carry water, as you will be moving between outdoor monuments and shrines.
- Note that the Ramabhar Stupa, the Buddha's cremation site, lies east of the Parinirvana Temple on the Kushinagar–Deoria road, so it is a separate stop rather than part of the central walkable cluster.
Autos and Local Transport
Auto-rickshaws are available for getting around town and for reaching sites such as the Ramabhar Stupa that sit outside the main walkable area. There are no fixed rates, so agree on the fare with the driver before you set off.
- Always bargain before starting your tour, since prices are negotiated rather than metered.
- Autos are a sensible option for covering the distance between the central monuments and outlying sites.
Rail
Kushinagar itself does not have a railway station serving visitors. The nearest railhead is Deoria Sadar, and the nearest major city with better rail connectivity is Gorakhpur. If you are arriving by train, plan to continue your journey by road from one of these points.
Buses and Road Connections
Kushinagar is connected to Lucknow by the NH-28. Buses between Gorakhpur and Kushinagar are frequent and take around two hours, making the bus a straightforward option for reaching the town from the larger city. Gorakhpur, as the nearest major city, is the natural hub for onward connections.
Airport and Arrival
Kushinagar International Airport (KBK) serves the town, but it currently handles only limited flights. Because of this, many visitors use Gorakhpur's airport (GOK) instead, which lies about 55 km away and offers more options. From either airport, you will need to complete your journey to the town by road.
- If your flight lands at Kushinagar International Airport, you are already close to the town and its monuments.
- If you arrive at Gorakhpur, expect a road transfer of roughly 55 km; frequent buses run between Gorakhpur and Kushinagar and take around two hours.
Practical Tips
- Base yourself near the main monument cluster so the temples, stupa, shrine and museum are within walking distance.
- Use autos for the Ramabhar Stupa and any other outlying sites, and settle the fare in advance.
- Treat Gorakhpur as your main gateway for both rail and air, since it has the better connectivity of the two cities.
- Allow extra time for road travel, as bus journeys between Gorakhpur and Kushinagar take around two hours.
