Getting Around Seoni
Seoni is a small city in Madhya Pradesh, set halfway between Nagpur and Jabalpur, and it serves as the main gateway for visitors heading to Pench National Park. Getting around is straightforward: this is a compact, low-rise city where most of what a visitor needs is close at hand, and the wider district is reached by road or rail.
Arriving by Rail
Seoni Railway Station (station code: SEY) is the primary transportation hub for the district and the most practical way to reach the city from outside the region. The station sits on an electrified broad-gauge line, and express services connect Seoni directly to the national capital, New Delhi, and the state capital, Bhopal, as well as to other major cities such as Indore and Gwalior. Trains originating from Seoni include the Patalkot Express and the Pench Valley Express, while services such as the Nagpur–Shahdol and Rewa–Itwari expresses, along with Nainpur–Chhindwara passenger trains, also halt here.
For visitors, the station is also the nearest major railhead for trips into Pench National Park. The station has two separate station buildings for entry and exit, on either side of the tracks, so it is worth checking which side your onward transport is waiting before you set off. Tickets for these services are booked through the usual Indian Railways channels.
Buses and Road Transport
Seoni is well connected by road. National Highway 44, the long north–south corridor, passes through the district, and National Highway 347 links Seoni with Multai and the wider highway network. Fair-weather roads connect the major towns across the district, which makes buses and shared road transport the main way of reaching surrounding settlements and the forest areas.
For a visitor, the practical takeaway is that road travel is the default for short hops and for reaching Pench and other nearby attractions, while rail is the better choice for longer journeys to major cities.
Taxis and Local Transport
Seoni is a small city, and local movement is typically handled by taxis, auto-rickshaws and similar hired vehicles rather than by a formal urban transit network. There is no metro or tram system in Seoni, so visitors should plan on hiring a vehicle or arranging transport through their hotel for local errands and day trips.
Because the city is compact, many journeys within Seoni itself are short, and the main public gardens, market area and the Dalsagar tank are all part of the central townscape that can be covered in a single outing.
Walking
Seoni is a small, walkable city at around 2,005 feet above sea level. Its central features — the public gardens, the market place and the tank — are close together, so walking is a reasonable way to get a feel for the town. Do bear in mind that the city is the base for a district with substantial forest cover, and that trips out to Pench, Amodagarh and other sites require a vehicle rather than a stroll.
Airports and Reaching the City
The nearest airport to Seoni is Nagpur, roughly 130 km away. For most visitors flying in, Nagpur is the arrival point, and the onward journey to Seoni is made by road or by connecting rail services.
Seoni also has a small airport — an air-strip near Sukhtara village, about 17 km from the city — used for landing charter airplanes and helicopters. This is not a scheduled commercial airport, so it is only relevant if you are arriving by private charter.
Practical Tips
- Use Seoni Railway Station as your anchor for long-distance travel; it links directly to Delhi and Bhopal by express train.
- Check which side of the station your pickup is on — there are separate entry and exit buildings on either side of the tracks.
- Plan on road transport for reaching Pench National Park and other district attractions; Seoni is the nearest major railhead for the park.
- Expect to hire taxis or auto-rickshaws for local trips, since there is no metro or tram network in the city.
- If you are flying in commercially, land at Nagpur and arrange the onward journey to Seoni from there.
- Allow time for the town itself on foot — the gardens, market and tank are all part of the central area.
