Getting Around Ratlam
Ratlam is a compact city in the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh, and getting around it is generally simple. There is no metro or tram network here — the city is small enough that such systems aren't currently needed, and the nearest city developing a metro is Indore. In practice, visitors rely on auto-rickshaws, cycle-rickshaws, the railway station, and buses for longer trips.
Auto-Rickshaws: The Main Way to Move
Auto-rickshaws are the primary mode of transport within Ratlam's city limits. They operate in two forms:
- Shared autos — run on fixed routes and are very cheap. You'll share the vehicle with other passengers.
- Private autos — you hire the whole vehicle, and the fare is negotiable with the driver.
For most short hops around town, a shared or private auto is the easiest option. Autos are also the suggested way to reach several local sights, including Kalika Mata Mandir, Mahalakshmi Temple, and Babus Water Park.
Cycle-Rickshaws
Cycle-rickshaws remain common in the older, narrower parts of the city, such as Chandni Chowk, where motorized vehicles struggle to pass. They're a practical choice for exploring the market lanes — in fact, cars should be avoided in Chandni Chowk's very narrow lanes (popular for gold and sev), so use an auto-rickshaw or simply walk instead.
City Buses and Public Transport
There are few formal local buses in Ratlam, and most internal movement happens by shared or private auto-rickshaw rather than by bus. For travel beyond the city, however, buses are a solid option:
- Intercity buses depart from Ratlam Bus Stand on Mhow Road, connecting to Indore, Bhopal, Udaipur, and Ahmedabad.
- Operators include MPSRTC (MP Tourism) and private firms such as Hans Travels and Chartered Bus.
Rail: Ratlam Junction and Local Trains
Ratlam Junction (RTM) is one of India's busiest and most important railway stations, and it serves as the divisional headquarters for Western Railways. It sits on the Delhi–Mumbai and Ajmer–Khandwa rail routes, making it a major junction for the region.
Just outside the main exit you'll find 24/7 pre-paid auto stands, cycle-rickshaws, and taxi counters — a convenient, fixed-price way to start your onward journey into the city.
For short trips to nearby towns, local MEMU and DEMU trains are the cheapest and fastest options. They connect Ratlam to places such as Nagda, Jaora, Ujjain, and Indore. A local train is also a suggested way to reach Bilpakeshwara Temple.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis and rental cars are less necessary for getting around the city itself, but they're the practical choice for out-of-city sights such as the Cactus Garden at Sailana and Dholawad Dam. A private taxi is also suggested for Kedareshwar Temple.
- Outstation rates run roughly ₹9–12 per kilometre.
- Full-day local sightseeing packages (about 8 hours / 80 km) cost around ₹1,500 for a hatchback, rising to ₹3,500 or more for an Innova or SUV.
- Operators include Clear Car Rental, Cabbazar, and local agencies found near Station Road.
If you need a car for the day, booking through one of these agencies or arranging it at your hotel is the usual approach.
Walking
Walking works well in specific areas rather than as a city-wide strategy. The narrow lanes of Chandni Chowk Market are best explored on foot or by cycle-rickshaw, since cars can't navigate them comfortably. For longer cross-city journeys, though, you'll want an auto-rickshaw rather than walking.
Getting from the Airport into the City
In practice, visitors should plan to arrive via Ratlam Junction railway station or the intercity bus stand, both of which have onward transport — pre-paid autos, cycle-rickshaws, and taxis at the station, and autos or buses from Mhow Road — readily available.
Quick Practical Tips
- Use shared autos for cheap, fixed-route hops; negotiate the fare for a private auto.
- Take a cycle-rickshaw or walk through Chandni Chowk's market lanes — avoid bringing a car.
- Start from Ratlam Junction's main exit, where pre-paid autos and taxi counters operate around the clock.
- For nearby towns, check MEMU/DEMU local trains before booking a taxi — they're the cheapest and fastest option.
- For out-of-city sights, book a taxi or rental car in advance through an agency or your hotel.
