Getting Around Khargone
Khargone is a compact district headquarters town on the bank of the Kunda river in south-west Madhya Pradesh, and getting around it is a fairly simple, low-key affair. There is no metro or tram system here, and no local rail network within the city itself, so visitors rely on road transport: buses, auto-rickshaws, taxis and their own two feet. The practical guidance below covers how the pieces fit together.
Rail, Metro and Tram
Khargone has no metro, tram or suburban rail network, and the city itself is not served by a railway station. The nearest railhead is in Khandwa, roughly 90 km to the east. If you are arriving by train, plan on completing the last leg of the journey by road.
- There is no metro or tram in Khargone — do not expect one.
- Khandwa is the nearest railway station; from there you can catch a bus to Khargone, a journey of about two hours.
Buses and Other Public Transport
Buses are the main form of public transport for reaching Khargone and for covering longer hops in the region. They are the practical option if you are coming in from Khandwa by rail, and they also connect the city with Indore, the state capital.
- From Khandwa, buses run to Khargone and take around two hours.
- Buses also link Khargone with Indore, but note that the bus journey takes noticeably longer than driving the same route.
- For day-to-day movement within the city, expect to use road transport rather than a formal urban transit network.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
For the longer road journeys into and out of Khargone — particularly from Indore — a hired car or taxi is the quickest and most comfortable choice. A direct drive from Indore takes roughly two and a half hours, considerably faster than the bus. Within the city, auto-rickshaws and local taxis are the usual way to cover distances too far to walk.
- Hiring a car or taxi from Indore is the fastest way to reach Khargone.
- Allow about two and a half hours for the direct drive from Indore; buses on the same route take longer.
- For short local trips, auto-rickshaws and taxis are the standard options.
Walking
Khargone is a small city, and its central areas — including the riverside surroundings of the Kunda — are manageable on foot for short errands and sightseeing. Walking is a reasonable way to get between nearby points in the city centre, though for anything further afield you will want a rickshaw or taxi. Be mindful of the climate: summers here are extremely hot and dry, with daytime temperatures commonly above 40 °C in April and May and a hot local wind known as the "loo," so it is best to walk in the cooler hours. The monsoon brings heavy rain and can cause the Kunda to flood from the outskirts of the city, which may affect low-lying routes.
- Central Khargone is walkable for short distances.
- Avoid midday walking in the pre-monsoon summer heat; mornings and evenings are far more comfortable.
- During the monsoon, be alert to flooding of the Kunda river on the city's outskirts.
Getting from the Airport
Khargone has no airport of its own. The nearest major airport is at Indore, which is also the state capital and the main gateway for the region. From Indore, the onward journey to Khargone is by road.
- Fly into Indore, then travel to Khargone by road.
- A direct car or taxi from Indore takes roughly two and a half hours.
- Buses from Indore are available but take longer than a private vehicle.
