Getting Around Dewas

Dewas is a city in the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh, well connected by road and rail. For a visitor, the practical picture is simple: there is no airport, metro, or tram network in Dewas itself, so getting around means a mix of auto-rickshaws, taxis, ride-hailing apps, buses, and trains. The sections below cover each option in turn.

Rail

Dewas Junction (station code: DWX) is the main railway junction of the city. It is a 'B' Grade Railway Junction under the Ratlam division of the Western Railways zone, situated on the Indore–Gwalior rail line and connected to nearby junctions such as Indore Junction (INDB) and Ujjain Junction (UJN) via an electrified rail line.

For practical travel, Dewas has direct trains from all the major cities of India. Premium services include the daily Awanitka Express from Mumbai and the thrice-weekly Pune–Indore Express from Pune. There are two daily trains from New Delhi, the Hazarat Nizamuddin Intercity Express and the Malwa Express. Frequent passenger and express trains also run to and from Indore Junction, a journey of roughly an hour, and daily services connect to Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur and other destinations via the Indore or Ratlam routes. Booking trains online in advance is advisable for the best fares.

Metro and Tram

There is no metro system in Dewas, and no tram network. The nearest metro services are in larger cities, with Indore proposed and Bhopal in planning. Visitors should not expect rail-based urban transit within the city.

Buses and Other Public Transport

Dewas has a central bus stand served by state (MP Road Transport) and private buses to nearby and long-distance destinations. Buses link Dewas with Indore, Ujjain, Bhopal and other cities. On the Dewas–Indore route there are multiple daily buses, including AC, non-AC and sleeper options, with a journey of about one to one and a half hours. Dewas–Ujjain and Dewas–Bhopal services are operated by MP Road Transport and private operators, and fares vary by bus type and operator.

Tickets can be booked online through platforms such as MakeMyTrip, redBus and Goibibo. Booking buses and trains online in advance is recommended, especially during peak tourist and festival periods when transport demand is higher.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Uber, Ola and local taxi services operate within Dewas and to nearby cities such as Indore and Ujjain. Car hire is also available, either self-drive or with a chauffeur, from Indore Airport or city centres. For short distances within the city, local autos are the usual choice.

Walkability

In practice, local autos are used for short distances within the city, which suggests that walking is best suited to short trips in the immediate area rather than as a primary way of getting across town.

Getting from the Airport into the City

Dewas has no airport of its own. The nearest airport is Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport (Indore Airport, code IDR), roughly 40 km from Dewas. From the airport, transfers to Dewas can be made by cab, by bus, or by train via Indore station. Airport transfers are easiest from Indore Airport, and car hire can be arranged there as well.
