Getting Around Purnia
Purnia is a road- and rail-focused city. There is no metro and no tram network here, so getting around means choosing between road vehicles and, for longer journeys, the railway. The good news for a visitor is that the city is compact enough that short hops are cheap and easy, while the rail stations and bus stands give you solid links to the rest of Bihar and beyond.
Local Transport Within the City
For short trips inside Purnia, the workhorses are auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws (also used as shared rickshaws). These are the most common way locals and visitors alike cover short distances, and you will find them readily available around markets, hotels and station areas.
- Auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws: The default choice for short city trips. Fares are typically unmetered, so agree on the price with the driver before you set off.
- Local taxis and private cabs: Available near busy markets, hotels and railway stations. They offer point-to-point rides and can also be hired for half-day or full-day packages if you want to cover several places in one outing.
- Self-drive rentals: Limited compared with larger metro cities. Some local operators can arrange a rental on request, but do not count on this as your primary option.
- Local buses and shared vehicles: These connect markets, educational zones and the main road junctions. Frequency varies depending on the time of day, so build in some flexibility if you rely on them.
Rail Network
Purnia is served by more than one railway station, which matters when you are planning a train journey. The stations serving the city include Purnea Junction, Purnia Court, and Ranipatra nearby. Many long-distance routes connect through larger junctions rather than directly, so a train change may be required to reach your final destination. Check which station your train actually uses before arranging your onward transfer.
Buses and Other Public Transport
Intercity private and state buses run from Purnia toward regional destinations including Patna and Katihar. Boarding points are around the main road junctions and the city bus stand area. If you are heading out of the city by bus, plan to start early, because roads and station areas get busy during the morning and evening peak hours.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Beyond the auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws, taxis and private cabs fill the gap for longer or more comfortable trips. Ride-hailing through regional apps is common here, and call-based taxis are also widely used, so you are not limited to flagging a vehicle on the street. As with auto-rickshaws, it is sensible to confirm the fare or the app estimate before you start.
Walkability
Walking works best for short, local errands rather than as a way to cross the whole city. The practical caution is traffic: roads and railway station areas are busy during morning and evening peak hours, so if you are on foot, keep to the busier, well-lit stretches and be mindful of vehicles. For anything beyond a short stroll, an auto-rickshaw or e-rickshaw is the more practical choice.
Getting There from the Airport
Purnia does not have its own major airport in practical use for most visitors. The nearest major airport is Bagdogra Airport, roughly 145 km away, with taxi or bus connections onward to Purnia. In practice, most visitors arrive by train or road rather than by air. If you do fly into Bagdogra, arrange your onward taxi or bus connection in advance, and allow for the fact that this is a long road transfer rather than a quick city hop.
Practical Tips
- Agree the fare before starting any auto-rickshaw or e-rickshaw trip, since meters are not the norm.
- Start early for intercity journeys by road or rail, as peak-hour congestion around stations and main roads can slow you down.
- Expect queues and crowds at stations during peak seasons, and leave extra time for buying tickets and boarding.
- Confirm which Purnia station your train uses, and whether a change at a larger junction is needed.
- For a full day of sightseeing, a hired taxi or private cab with a half-day or full-day package can be simpler than piecing together multiple short rides.
