Getting Around Gaya
Gaya is a city in Bihar, India, and it serves as a practical base for visitors heading to nearby Bodh Gaya. The city is well connected by air, rail and road, and getting around is generally straightforward once you understand the main options.
Arriving by Air
Gaya Airport (IATA code GAY) is the city's own airport. It handles domestic flights, with Air India operating services from Delhi, Kolkata, Yangon and Varanasi, plus seasonal flights from other providers, including from Bangkok. Because the flight schedule is limited and partly seasonal, it is worth confirming your route before you build a trip around it.
If Gaya Airport does not suit your dates, Patna Airport (IATA code PAT) is the second option. Patna is well connected to Gaya by both rail and road service, so you can fly into Patna and continue overland.
Arriving by Train
Gaya Junction is the hub for many trains passing through Bihar. There are plenty of direct trains from Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Patna, making rail one of the most useful ways to reach the city. If you are coming from a major Indian city, checking train options into Gaya Junction first is a sensible starting point.
Arriving by Bus
Many private buses operate daily, including A/C, non-A/C and luxury services. You can pick up a bus from Jamshedpur, Ranchi, Patna, Hazaribagh and Dhanbad, and there are overnight buses from Siliguri. For travellers already in the region, buses are a flexible alternative to the train.
Arriving by Car
You can easily visit Gaya by car, and there are many car rental companies available. Nalanda Travels, for example, provides cabs on rent for trips to Rajgir, Nalanda, Patna, Vaishali and Varanasi. Hiring a car with a driver is a convenient way to combine Gaya with the surrounding Buddhist and historical sites.
Getting Around the City
In practice, visitors move around Gaya using the same road-based options that bring them into the region:
- Trains — Gaya Junction is the rail hub for the area, useful for onward journeys rather than short hops around town.
- Buses — private A/C, non-A/C and luxury buses run daily and connect Gaya with nearby towns and cities.
- Cars and cabs — rental companies such as Nalanda Travels offer cabs on rent, both for local use and for trips to Rajgir, Nalanda, Patna, Vaishali and Varanasi.
Practical Tips
- Book your train into Gaya Junction early if you are travelling from Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai or Patna, since this is a busy through-station.
- If your flight options into Gaya Airport are limited or seasonal, consider flying into Patna and continuing by rail or road.
- For day trips to Bodh Gaya and the surrounding sites, a hired car with a driver is the simplest arrangement.
- Because the city has no metro or tram system, plan on road transport for getting around locally.
