Getting Your Bearings
Darbhanga is one of the largest cities in Bihar and an important hub in North Bihar, serving as the headquarters of both the district and the division. It sits on a vast alluvial plain in the Mithila region and is often called the "Cultural Capital of Bihar" and the "Heart of Mithila." For a visitor, the practical upshot is a compact, busy city where short hops are made by rickshaw and longer journeys by train, bus, or taxi.
Darbhanga is a major rail and road junction, which makes it easy to reach and reasonably easy to move around once you arrive. There is no metro or tram in service, so plan on a mix of rickshaws, shared three-wheelers, buses, and taxis.
Local Transport: Rickshaws, Totos and Shared Autos
Most reliable and easily available local transport is the cycle rickshaw. Auto rickshaws and cycle rickshaws are the most common way people cover short distances within the city, and e-rickshaws — locally called "totos" — plus shared three-wheelers are affordable options well suited to narrow streets and market areas.
- Cycle rickshaws: the most dependable short-hop option; good for reaching nearby sights.
- Auto rickshaws: widely used for daily mobility around town.
- E-rickshaws ("totos") and shared three-wheelers: cheap for short trips and handy in congested lanes.
- Where to find them: shared three-wheelers and buses are available from the railway station and the bus terminal, and cycle and shared autos run short routes from those same terminals.
Carry local UPI or cash for autos, rickshaws, and short rides — these are the modes where you will most often pay directly.
Rail Network
Darbhanga is well connected to other parts of India and Bihar by rail, and it functions as a major rail junction. There are two stations serving the city: Darbhanga Junction and Laheriasarai. Both connect nationally.
Direct trains run from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Patna, Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar, Mysore, and many other cities across the country. As a rough guide to scheduling, normal travelling time from New Delhi to Darbhanga is around 21 to 24 hours. Named services include the Maithili Express (Darbhanga–Kolkata, bi-weekly), the Darbhanga–Jalandhar Antyodaya Express (weekly, toward northwest India), and the Howrah–Darbhanga Express (weekly, eastern India).
Trains are frequent and affordable, though for some journeys road can be quicker. They are the sensible choice for long trips to Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and temple towns. Book intercity trains online in advance, especially in peak season.
Buses and Other Public Transport
Darbhanga sits on the east–west corridor map of India, with four- to six-lane roads linking it into the wider national network. Bus services are frequent and useful for reaching nearby cities.
- State (BSRTC) and private buses both operate; BSRTC is generally cheaper, while private buses may be more comfortable.
- Patna and Muzaffarpur: buses run every ten minutes. The Muzaffarpur bus takes about 1¼ to 1½ hours; the Patna bus takes about four hours.
- Other destinations: direct buses also serve Siliguri, Ranchi, Samastipur, and other Bihar cities.
- Where to catch them: buses are available from the railway station and bus terminal, alongside shared three-wheelers.
Darbhanga is also the junction for several Bihar State Highways and is crossed by National Highway 27, part of the East–West corridor, which locally links the city to Muzaffarpur, Jhanjharpur, and Purnia. National Highway 527B branches north from Darbhanga toward Aunsi and the border town of Jaynagar. An Amas–Darbhanga Expressway is under development, aimed at cutting regional travel times.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis and car rentals offer door-to-door service, airport transfers, and local touring, with hatchbacks, sedans, and SUVs available. Online app services, including Uber, operate in the city. Rentals can be booked by the half-day or full-day, which suits visitors planning to see several sights or make a side trip.
Practical advice: pre-book taxis for airport transfers or long day tours, and book early in the day for peak-season availability. For everything else, rickshaws and shared autos are usually the simpler choice.
Walkability
Darbhanga is not a small city, and you will generally need some form of transport to get around and see the places of interest. Walking works best for short stretches within a market or neighbourhood, but for covering the city's attractions, plan on rickshaws or taxis. Most city attractions are accessible by rickshaw or taxi.
Among the sights to plan transport for: Kankali Mata Temple is near Darbhanga Junction; Shyama Temple, Sati Asthan, and Manokamna Temple are within the city; and Ahilya Asthan and Kusheshwarasthan Bird Sanctuary lie nearby and are best reached by car or bus. The Maharaja Laxmiswar Singh Museum, a royal history museum, is another city stop.
Getting In From the Airport
Darbhanga Airport (IATA: DBR) sits on the outskirts of the city, near the NH-105 and NH-57 East–West Corridor Expressway that passes through the city. Only two airlines currently operate there: IndiGo connects to Hyderabad and Kolkata, and SpiceJet to Bangalore, Delhi, and Mumbai.
Because the airport is outside the city proper, arrange your onward transfer in advance. Pre-booking a taxi is the recommended approach for airport transfers, and app-based ride-hailing (including Uber) operates in the city as an alternative. If you would rather use public transport, buses and shared three-wheelers run from the railway station and bus terminal, but these are in the city rather than at the airport, so a taxi or pre-arranged pickup is the more practical way to bridge the gap.
