Getting Around Begusarai

Begusarai is a district town in Bihar, on the northern bank of the Ganges in the Mithila region, and it is the administrative headquarters of its district. For a visitor, the practical reality is simple: there is no metro and no tram here, and intra-city travel is entirely road-based. The town's transport is built around its railway connections and the nearby Barauni complex, so most journeys begin or end at a station.

Rail: The Backbone of Travel

Begusarai railway station is the town's main rail hub, and nearby Barauni Junction is a larger junction serving the area. Trains are frequent and affordable, and rail is the most economical way to reach Begusarai — including from Patna, Hajipur and Barauni. Regular passenger and express services link the town to Patna, Darbhanga, Samastipur, Bhagalpur and the wider Bihar and eastern India network.

Buses and Other Public Transport

Government-run buses connect Begusarai to nearby cities and districts, while private buses run on the popular routes with more flexible timings. Fares are budget-friendly, but schedules can vary, so it pays to check departure times locally rather than assume a fixed timetable. Within the town itself, local buses operate alongside the smaller vehicles below.

Auto-Rickshaws, E-Rickshaws and Cycle Rickshaws

Auto-rickshaws are the most common form of local transport. You will find them at markets, stations and residential areas, and they are used for both short and medium distances. E-rickshaws are widely available and low-cost for short city rides, while cycle rickshaws are limited to very short distances and are common near markets and narrow streets — the cheapest option of the three.

Taxis, Cabs and Self-Drive

Taxis and cabs are available locally for short rides and for full-day sightseeing. Outstation taxis are commonly used for trips to Patna, Rajgir, Munger and nearby towns. Hiring a taxi is recommended if you plan to visit Kanwar Lake and the surrounding attractions, where local transport is less convenient. Private cars and self-drive are also an option: the area is served by national and state highways, including NH-31, which makes a car practical for families and groups wanting to visit several sites in a day. As with autos, confirm the fare before travelling.

Walking

Walking works best for short errands and around the town centre, where you will find banks, pharmacies, vegetable markets and basic shops, as well as in the Barauni industrial belt. For anything beyond a short distance, plan on using an auto, e-rickshaw or cycle rickshaw rather than relying on foot. Two practical cautions: travel early in the morning to avoid traffic and heat, and avoid isolated areas late at night.

Getting There from the Airport

Begusarai has no airport of its own — the airfield at Begusarai Ulao is inactive. The nearest airports are Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport in Patna (PAT) and Darbhanga Airport (DBR). Both require an onward road or rail leg, and many visitors transfer through Patna or Darbhanga for their air connections.
