Orientation: A River Town on Kolkata's Northern Edge

Naihati sits in North 24 Parganas district, West Bengal, on the bank of the Hooghly, and forms part of the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority area. For a visitor it functions as a compact, walkable river town with a busy railway junction at its heart, well connected to Kolkata and the surrounding industrial belt. The neighbourhoods of Garifa, Kultala, Bibeksarani, Bijaynagar, Nimbagan and Fingapara sit within or alongside the town, so when locals give directions they may use these names rather than "Naihati" itself.

Arriving by Train

The railway is the backbone of travel to and from Naihati. Naihati Junction is the main railhead, with frequent local trains running from Sealdah station in Kolkata; the journey takes roughly an hour and costs very little. If you are coming from further afield, long-distance trains from Delhi, Mumbai or Bangalore generally arrive at Howrah or Sealdah, from where you change onto a local train for the final leg. Overnight trains are the sensible choice when travelling between states, so that you spend daylight hours on the move rather than waiting.

One practical caveat: foreigners cannot easily register with Indian Railways online. If you plan to book long-distance rail, sort out your ticketing arrangements in advance rather than assuming you can do it all through the website.

Arriving by Bus or Road

Local and state buses, mostly run by CSTC/CTC or private operators, link Naihati with the rest of North 24 Parganas and with Kolkata. There is no grand formal terminal to look for: buses stop informally along the main roads, so ask locally where the service you want picks up. From Kolkata (Esplanade or Barasat) the bus ride takes around one and a half to two hours and is inexpensive.

By road, Naihati is reached via the Barrackpore–Kalyani Expressway and NH12 (Jessore Road). From central Kolkata the drive is roughly one and a half to two hours depending on traffic, with modest tolls on the way. Road conditions are generally good.

Arriving by Ferry

Naihati Ferry Ghat offers a ferry service across the Hooghly to Chinsurah. This is a genuinely pleasant way to arrive or to make a short excursion, and it links the town to the opposite bank rather than to Kolkata.

Getting Around Town

Within Naihati, short trips by auto-rickshaw or similar shared vehicles are the norm. Fares for short hops are low, and on fixed routes you should expect to share the ride with others. For very short distances, such as around the bazaar area, the fare is lower still. In every case, confirm the fare before you set off, and for longer journeys within the town or out to nearby localities, expect crowding at peak hours.

Buses also serve movement within and between Naihati and its neighbours, but routes are not always obvious to a newcomer. Asking locals for the correct bus is the quickest way to work it out.

Walkability

Naihati is a compact municipal town with an extensive network of roads and open drains, and much of the everyday life — markets, the railway station, the riverfront — sits within reach on foot. Walking is a realistic option for getting between the station, the bazaar and nearby neighbourhoods, particularly in the cooler winter months. Be aware that summers are hot and humid, with temperatures that can climb very high, and the monsoon brings torrential rain, so plan walks for the morning or evening and carry water.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis are a practical option for point-to-point trips, including the run to and from the airport. As with auto-rickshaws, agree the fare before starting. Ride-hailing apps are not something the source material confirms as established in Naihati, so treat app-based hailing as uncertain and be prepared to use a local taxi or shared vehicle instead.

From the Airport into Naihati

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) is the gateway for air travellers, served by airlines including IndiGo, Air India and SpiceJet. You have two sensible ways into Naihati:

The train option is the cheaper of the two and avoids road traffic, but it involves getting from the airport to Dum Dum Cantonment first, so allow extra time if you are carrying luggage.
