Getting Around Jalpaiguri

Jalpaiguri is a compact city on the banks of the Teesta and Karala rivers, in the foothills of the Himalayas. It sits close to its larger twin city, Siliguri, and the two together form the biggest urban area in the region. For a visitor, the practical upshot is simple: most of what you need is within a short ride of wherever you are staying, and the transport options are cheap and easy to find.

Local Transport Within the City

For short hops around town, the standard local options are cycle-rickshaws, totos (also called autos), and city buses. These are easy to find almost anywhere in the city, so you rarely need to plan ahead. Cycle-rickshaws suit short distances and narrow lanes; totos and autos cover the same ground a little faster; city buses run along the main routes. Fares are typically negotiated or paid in cash on the spot, so carry small notes.

If you prefer a private vehicle, you can hire a taxi from the taxi stands scattered around the city. Ride-hailing apps are not part of the transport picture described for Jalpaiguri, so plan on flagging down a local vehicle or arranging a taxi through your hotel rather than summoning one by phone.

Walkability

Jalpaiguri is a low-lying city at the base of the Himalayas, and it receives a great deal of rain throughout the year, with a pronounced monsoon from June to September. Humidity is high. Walking is perfectly feasible for short errands and neighbourhood exploring, but the weather is the deciding factor: expect to get wet in the monsoon months and to move slowly in the heat of summer. Keep a rain jacket or umbrella handy and treat walking as a fair-weather option rather than your main way of covering distance.

Rail

Jalpaiguri is served by several railway stations, and knowing which one you want saves confusion:

For most visitors arriving by train, Jalpaiguri Road is the station to aim for, since it has the widest choice of long-distance services. Buy tickets at the station counters in the usual way; for reserved express travel, book in advance through the Indian Railways system. Note that Jalpaiguri has no metro or tram network — rail here means the national railway, not urban rapid transit.

Buses and Other Public Transport

Buses are the workhorse of regional travel, and Jalpaiguri has several distinct bus stands, each with its own destinations. It is worth matching the stand to where you want to go:

Beyond the state network, the Royal Government of Bhutan runs buses from Jalpaiguri to its border town of Jaigaon/Phuentsholing, and an air-conditioned sleeper coach service (the Banglashree Express) connects Jalpaiguri with Kolkata. Tickets are generally bought at the terminus or on boarding, depending on the operator.

Getting There by Road

Jalpaiguri sits just beside National Highway 31D (now numbered NH 27), the road that links Assam and the entire North East with the rest of India, so the city is well connected by road. Siliguri is a short drive away, and a state highway runs from Jalpaiguri to Haldibari, near the Bangladesh border. If you are arriving by car or taxi from Siliguri, the highway brings you directly into town.

From the Airport into the City

The nearest airport is Bagdogra Airport (IXB) near Siliguri, north-west of Jalpaiguri. It has regular flights to major Indian cities including Kolkata, New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Guwahati, and international connections to Paro and Bangkok.

Bagdogra is not in Jalpaiguri itself, so you will need ground transport for the onward leg. The practical choices are a pre-paid or hired taxi from the airport, or a bus or shared vehicle to Siliguri followed by a connecting bus or train to Jalpaiguri. Because the airport sits closer to Siliguri than to Jalpaiguri, many visitors break the journey there. Whichever option you choose, arrange it before you land if you can, and allow generous time — this is a hill-fringe region where rain can slow road travel considerably.
