Getting Around Bardhaman

Bardhaman (also spelled Burdwan) is a city on the northern bank of the Damodar river in West Bengal, and it is well served by rail and road links to the rest of the region. For a visitor, the practical picture is simple: the city is compact enough to explore on foot in its central areas, cycle rickshaws and electric rickshaws handle the shorter hops, and buses and trains connect you to the wider region. The main tourist attractions sit near the major roads, so a mix of walking and short rickshaw rides is the most convenient way to get around.

Walking

Walking is a genuinely good option in Bardhaman. Because the principal sights are located close to the major roads, you can cover a lot of ground on foot without needing to arrange transport. There is no need to book a rickshaw in advance for this kind of wandering — a combination of walking and hailing rickshaws as you go is the best way to explore the city.

One practical caution: restrictions are imposed on totos (electric rickshaws) in Bardhaman, so crossing the Grand Trunk Road within the city using such vehicles can be problematic or even prohibited. If you need to cross the GT Road, either walk across or use a different mode of transport.

Cycle Rickshaws and Electric Rickshaws (Totos)

Cycle rickshaws and electric rickshaws — locally known as totos — are the mainstay of short-distance travel within the city. They are widely available, so you do not need to book one in advance; you can simply flag one down when you need it. A few autos also run in the city, though they are far less common.

You will find plenty of cycle rickshaws and electric rickshaws waiting outside Barddhaman railway station, which makes arriving by train straightforward. Rapido's bike and toto services are also active in the city if you prefer to book a ride through an app.

Buses and Other Public Transport

Bardhaman is well connected by bus to numerous places around the region. South Bengal State Transport Corporation (SBSTC) and private operators run services from destinations including Arambag, Asansol, Baharampur, Bankura, Bolpur, Esplanade, Kirnahar, Purulia, Saltlake and Tarakeswar. Journeys of this kind generally take around two to two and a half hours.

Most buses arrive at and depart from two main stands: Alisha Bus Stand on GT Road, near the eastern junction of GT Road and NH 19, and Uttara (Nababhat) Bus Stand on National Highway 19, near the western junction of GT Road and NH 19. A third stand, Tinkonia Bus Stand on GT Road, sits near Barddhaman station. For getting around within the city itself, there is a local bus facility known as Town Service that connects different areas of Bardhaman, and mini buses also operate within the city and its surroundings. An intracity connector run by SBSTC under the JNNURM project has also been provided.

If you are coming from Kolkata by bus, SBSTC and private operators run services from Esplanade and Karunamoyee, taking roughly two to two and a half hours.

Rail

Barddhaman Junction (station code BWN) is the city's railway station, located on GT Road. It sits on the Howrah–Delhi main line and is an important station in the Eastern Railway zone, with trains from both Howrah and Sealdah passing through. The main Howrah–Delhi rail track runs through Bardhaman, and the Howrah Rajdhani Express (via Patna) has a scheduled stop here. The city is well connected by rail to major cities including Kolkata, Ranchi, Patna, Durgapur, Asansol, Siliguri and Dhanbad.

For a straightforward approach from Kolkata, you can take a Howrah–Barddhaman chord line local train from Howrah, which reaches Bardhaman in about two hours; locals from Howrah or Sealdah take two hours or more. Alternatively, you can travel along the Sahibganj Loop, which branches off shortly after Bardhaman. The narrow gauge line to Katwa was upgraded to broad gauge and extended onward to Katwa.

The station itself is useful to know about: it has a two-bedded non-air-conditioned retiring room and an eight-bedded dormitory, high-speed Wi-Fi on each platform, and escalator service on platforms 2, 3 and 8. Outside the station building you will find plenty of cycle rickshaws and electric rickshaws. The bazaar around the station, colloquially known as Station Bazar, supplies essential commodities to both residents and commuters.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Ride-hailing is available in Bardhaman through Rapido, which operates both bike and toto services in the city. Beyond that, the practical options for point-to-point travel are the widely available cycle rickshaws and totos, plus the small number of autos. For longer journeys out of the city, buses and trains are the established choices.

Getting There from the Airport

Bardhaman has no airport of its own, so you will arrive via one of two airports and continue by road or rail.

In either case, you will need to change to another mode of transport to complete the journey. From Kolkata, the natural connections are the bus services from Esplanade and Karunamoyee (about two to two and a half hours) or the local trains from Howrah and Sealdah (about two hours or more).

Arriving by Car

The Grand Trunk Road runs across the city, while NH 19 — also called the Durgapur Expressway — bypasses it. Sadarghat Road connects Bardhaman with the Hooghly district directly and with Bankura indirectly. Within the station area, a flyover starting from Mehedi Bagan helps reduce traffic and links GT Road with Kalna-Katwa Road.
