Getting Around Balurghat

Balurghat is the headquarters of the Dakshin Dinajpur district in West Bengal, sitting along National Highway 512 and the Atrai (Atreyee) River, with the India–Bangladesh border only a short distance away. The river divides the city into two unequal halves, and the heart of the city — its administrative, cultural and entertainment hubs — lies on the eastern bank. That geography matters for a visitor: most of what you will want to see and do is on the eastern side, so plan your movements around that.

Rail

Balurghat Railway Station is the terminus of the Eklakhi–Balurghat branch line, which makes it the natural arrival point if you come into the region by train. The station is served by direct trains to Kolkata, including the Sealdah–Balurghat Express, the Tebhaga Express and the Howrah–Balurghat Express. There is also a Balurghat–Siliguri Intercity Express for connections north, a Balurghat–Malda Court passenger train, and the Balurghat–Nabadwip Dham Express. Longer-distance services have extended the city's reach: the Farakka Express runs from Balurghat towards New Delhi and on to Bathinda, and the SMVT Bengaluru–Balurghat Express links the city with South India via Kharagpur, Bhubaneswar and Perambur near Chennai.

For a visitor, the practical takeaway is that Balurghat is a rail terminus rather than a through station, so trains here are oriented towards arriving and departing rather than passing through. Buy tickets at the station in the usual Indian Railways manner — reserved tickets in advance for the named expresses, or unreserved for the shorter passenger services.

Buses and Other Public Transport

Balurghat has two separate bus stands: one for government buses and one for private buses. The main government operator serving the area is the NBSTC, with the SBSTC providing a more limited service and the WBTC operating only on the Kolkata–Balurghat route. Between the government and private stands, buses run from Balurghat to Kolkata, Siliguri, Jalpaiguri, Coochbehar, Kalna, Durgapur, Malda and Raiganj. If you are travelling to a major town in the region or heading to Kolkata overland, the bus stands are where you will find your options; simply choose the stand matching the operator you want.

There is no metro or tram network in Balurghat — this is a small district-headquarters city, and public transport means buses, shared vehicles and the railway rather than any urban rail system.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

The source material does not describe a formal taxi fleet, app-based ride-hailing or auto-rickshaw arrangements in Balurghat, so it is best to treat local hired transport as something you arrange on the ground — ask at your hotel or at the railway station — rather than something you can count on booking through a national app in advance.

Walking

Balurghat is a compact city, and the eastern bank holds the main administrative, cultural and entertainment hubs together in one area. If you are staying on that side, much of the city centre is manageable on foot. Do bear in mind that the Atreyee River cuts through the town, so crossing between the two banks is a real consideration when planning a walk rather than a short hop.

Getting In from the Airport

Balurghat Airport sits at the entrance of the town at Mahinagar, but it is not currently operating because of construction and executive issues. A Kolkata–Malda–Balurghat–Coochbehar flight service has been planned for the airport, and in earlier years there was a Kolkata–Malda–Balurghat helicopter service, but neither is a service you can rely on today.

In practice, this means you cannot currently fly into Balurghat and continue into the city by road from a local airport. Visitors arriving by air will come through another airport and complete the journey overland — most plausibly by train or bus, given the rail links to Kolkata and Siliguri and the bus services to Kolkata, Siliguri, Malda and Raiganj. If you are driving yourself, NH 512 runs through the district, and SH 10 acts as a bypass highway connecting the district with Raiganj and Siliguri.
