Getting Around Asansol
Asansol offers several transportation options for visitors navigating the city. The most practical approach is to combine different modes depending on your destination and preferences. Taxis, auto-rickshaws, and cycle rickshaws are all available for hire within the city. However, note that these vehicles do not use meters, so you should always agree on the fare before boarding.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Yellow and blue Ambassador taxis operate throughout Asansol, similar to those found in nearby Kolkata. You can readily find these taxis at Asansol Junction railway station and at certain other fixed points around the city. As with other local transport, negotiate your fare in advance rather than expecting metered charges.
Auto-Rickshaws and Cycle Rickshaws
Auto-rickshaws and cycle rickshaws are available for hire and offer a more economical alternative to taxis. Like all local hired transport in the city, fares are negotiated rather than metered, so confirm the cost before your journey begins.
Rail Network
Asansol Junction is an important railway station situated on the Howrah–Delhi main line, making it a major transport hub. Most trains stop here, and there are daily direct services to various parts of India. Long-distance trains connect Asansol to far-off destinations including Kanyakumari, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, and Dibrugarh, though service frequency varies. For shorter distances, you can also use passenger and local trains connecting nearby stations like Adra and Bardhaman.
If you plan to travel by train, book reserved seats well in advance, as trains are generally crowded. The station itself offers good facilities including Wi-Fi, a 24-hour food plaza, air-conditioned retiring rooms, and an escalator at platforms 2 and 7 for passenger convenience.
Buses and Public Transport
State-run bus services provide regular connections between Asansol and surrounding towns and cities. The South Bengal State Transport Corporation operates daily buses to Kolkata and numerous other destinations across the region, including Malda, Siliguri, Midnapur, Bankura, and Digha. The North Bengal State Transport Corporation also runs services to towns in North Bengal. In addition to state buses, many private operators offer intercity and local services.
From Kolkata, you can reach Asansol by air-conditioned Volvo buses or standard air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned SBSTC buses departing from Esplanade. Tickets can be booked in advance, online through platforms like Redbus, or at the bus stand on the day of travel.
Getting from the Airport
The nearest commercial airport is Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport in Durgapur, approximately 35 kilometers away by road. For international flights, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata is your main option. There is also a general aviation airstrip at Burnpur for small aircraft.
From either airport, you can arrange taxi or car hire to reach Asansol. Alternatively, the rail connection via Asansol Junction provides a practical option for reaching the city center once you have ground transport to the station.
Walkability
While specific information about pedestrian infrastructure is limited, taxis, auto-rickshaws, and cycle rickshaws are sufficiently available throughout the city that most visitors rely on these for movement rather than walking long distances. The city's layout and climate should be considered when planning walking routes.
Road Access
Asansol is strategically located on the Grand Trunk Road (NH 19), which has been widened to allow three-lane traffic in both directions as part of the Golden Quadrilateral project. NH 14 connects the city with Odisha. A highway bypass allows through-traffic to avoid the main city center. These road connections make car travel from Kolkata a viable option, with the Durgapur Expressway offering another route into the city.
