Getting Around Tirunelveli
Tirunelveli is a well-connected city with several transport options for visitors. The most common ways to move around are local buses, auto-rickshaws, and taxis. The city has a good mix of public and private transport operating throughout the day, giving you flexibility in how you travel.
Local Buses
Local buses are the primary transport mode for getting around the city. Both public and private operators run services within Tirunelveli, making buses an accessible and affordable option for visitors.
There are three main bus stands serving different routes and purposes:
- Bharat Ratna Dr. M.G.R New Bus Stand – Located in Veinthankulam, this is the main bus station. It handles regular services to nearby cities like Tenkasi, Tiruchendur, Thoothukudi, Kanyakumari, and Nagercoil, as well as to major cities across Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states including Madurai, Chennai, Coimbatore, and Bangalore.
- Junction Periyar Bus Stand – This terminal primarily serves local buses running within the city.
- Palayamkottai Bus Stand – Also located in the city, this stand serves as a terminal for local buses.
The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) operates local, Mofussil (inter-town), and long-distance services. The state also runs express buses through its State Express Bus Corporation (SETC) and other operators, providing connections to destinations across the region.
Train Services
Tirunelveli Junction Railway Station is one of the busiest and most important railway stations in Tamil Nadu. It serves as a major junction connecting the city to important destinations in all four directions: Madurai to the north, Nagercoil to the south, Tenkasi and Kollam to the west, and Tiruchendur and Thoothukudi to the east.
The station is well-equipped with modern facilities including computerized ticket booking and information displays showing train schedules and status. Tickets can also be purchased at a computerized booking center at Palayamkottai railway station.
The Tirunelveli-Tiruchendur route operates on broad-gauge track. Several express trains depart from Tirunelveli, including the Nellai Express, which connects the city to Chennai and runs fully booked throughout much of the year.
There are also smaller suburban railway stations within the city, such as Palayamkottai and Tirunelveli Town, though only local trains stop at these stations.
Auto-Rickshaws and Taxis
Auto-rickshaws are widely available throughout the city and are an important means of transport for visitors. Call taxis are also common and offer another convenient option for getting around. These vehicles provide more direct routes than buses and are useful for reaching specific destinations quickly.
Walkability
While specific information about walking conditions in the city centre is not detailed in available sources, the presence of a major overbridge—the Thiruvalluvar bridge—at Tirunelveli Junction shows the city's infrastructure development, designed to facilitate smooth movement across the railway line.
Getting from the Airport to the City
Tirunelveli is served by Tuticorin Airport, located in Vaagaikulam in Thoothukudi district, approximately 24–28 km east of the city. IndiGo Airlines operates daily flights from here to Chennai and Bangalore.
For international travel, the nearest international airports are Madurai International Airport and Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, both located about 150 km away by road.
From Tuticorin Airport, you can reach the city by hiring a taxi or call taxi, or by using bus services that connect the airport to the main bus stands. The journey takes roughly one hour by road.
Road Connections
Tirunelveli is well-connected by road and serves as a major transport junction for the region. The city lies on National Highway 44 (old NH 7), positioned 150 km south of Madurai and 80 km north of Kanyakumari. It is accessible by road from Madurai in about 3 hours and from Nagercoil in about 1.5 hours. National Highway 138 connects the city to Thoothukudi. The road network is being expanded with a 4-lane highway development project.
