Getting Your Bearings
Madhavaram is a locality in the north of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and it is served by the same public transport system that covers the rest of the city. Chennai's transit network comes in three basic types: bus, train and metro. For a visitor, that means you can reasonably plan to move around without a car, using a combination of city buses, suburban local trains and the metro, with auto-rickshaws and ride-hailing apps filling in the gaps.
Buses: The Backbone of Local Travel
The most visible way to get around Madhavaram is by bus. The area is served by MTC (Metropolitan Transport Corporation), including its Deluxe Service, and the wider city network also includes MTC Small Bus Service, MTC Express Service, MTC A/C Service, and CMRL Metro Feeder Buses that link neighbourhoods to metro stations.
Madhavaram Bypass is a key bus stop, and the nearby Madhavaram stop is a short walk away. From these stops you can reach a wide spread of the city and beyond. Useful destinations served from Madhavaram Bypass include:
- M.G.R. Koyambedu (C.M.B.T.) and Koyambedu Market — the city's main intercity bus terminus area
- Broadway, in the heart of the old city
- Tambaram, including Tambaram West Bus Station
- Siruseri I.T. Park and Mahindra Industrial Park
- Redhills / Red Hills Bus Terminal, Moolakadai, Manali and Manali New Town, Minjur
- Thiruvallur, Periyapalayam, Enambakkam, Arani, Tamaraipakkam Road Junction
- Ayanavaram, Kaviarasu Kannadasan Nagar, MMBT
Buses here run on a long day: the earliest departures are in the very early morning and services continue past midnight, so late arrivals and early starts are both workable. Fares are collected on board, and the route number on the front of the bus is the main thing to check before you board.
Suburban Trains
Chennai's local trains, operated as EMU (electric multiple unit) services by Southern Railways, are another practical option. Villivakkam railway station is the nearest railhead to the Madhavaram Bypass area, though it is a long walk rather than a short one — better reached by bus, auto or taxi. Local trains start running before dawn and the last services are around midnight, which makes them a dependable choice for longer north–south hops across the city. Buy a ticket at the station counter or use the city's suburban ticketing options; unreserved travel is the norm on these services.
Metro and Trams
Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) operates the city's metro, and Madhavaram has its own station, Madhavaram Depot metro station. Metro Feeder Buses connect neighbourhoods to metro stations, which is useful if your starting point is a little off the line. Tickets are bought at station counters or via the metro's own ticketing system, and fares are typically distance-based.
Note that Chennai's transit types are listed as bus, train and metro — there is no tram network to plan around, so ignore any older references to trams.
Taxis, Autos and Ride-Hailing
Auto-rickshaws and app-based cabs are the flexible option for short trips, late nights, or reaching a bus stop or station with luggage. They are especially handy for the gap between Madhavaram and Villivakkam railway station, which is too far to walk comfortably. Agree on a fare or confirm the app price before setting off.
Walking
Walking works well for short hops within Madhavaram itself — for example, between the Madhavaram Bypass stop and the Madhavaram stop, which are only a few minutes apart on foot. Beyond that, the area is spread out and the nearest railway station is a long walk, so plan to combine walking with a bus, auto or cab rather than relying on foot alone.
Getting In From the Airport
Chennai's airport sits south of the city, while Madhavaram is in the north, so the airport run is a cross-city journey. The most straightforward approach is a pre-paid taxi or a ride-hailing cab straight to your accommodation. If you prefer public transport, take a cab or auto from the airport to the nearest metro or suburban rail station, then continue north by metro or local train, finishing with a bus, auto or cab for the last stretch into Madhavaram. Allow generous time either way, since you are crossing the whole city.
Practical Tips
- Keep small change handy for bus fares and autos.
- Check the route number on the bus before boarding; several routes share the same stops.
- Use the metro where it fits your route and the feeder buses to reach stations.
- For early flights or late arrivals, note that buses and local trains run from before dawn until around midnight, but build in a buffer.
- For the airport, a direct cab is simplest; public transport works but requires a transfer in the city.
