Karaikkudi, India

Getting your bearings

Karaikudi is the largest city in Sivaganga district and the centre of the Chettinad region, a place visitors come to for Chettinad architecture, cuisine and heritage tourism. It is a compact city, and getting around is mostly a matter of choosing between buses, auto-rickshaws and your own two feet. There is no metro or tram system here, and the city's own airstrip has been unused since the 1950s, so most visitors arrive by train or bus and continue from there.

Arriving by train

Karaikudi is served by Karaikudi Junction of the Indian Railways. The station sits on the broad gauge line that connects Chennai Egmore and Rameswaram, which makes it the natural arrival point for travellers coming from either direction along that corridor. From the junction you can continue into town by local bus or auto-rickshaw.

Buses and public transport

The city has two bus stands: the Rajaji bus stand in the north-western part of town, and a newer bus stand on the eastern side. Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation operates inter-city bus services to major towns across Tamil Nadu, and private operators run moffusil buses to select cities including Bengaluru, Chennai, Coimbatore and Tiruppur. The state transport operation based in Karaikudi is part of the Kumbakonam Transport Division, and the Sivagangai transport department's head office is located in the city. Frequent buses connect Karaikudi with Pudukottai, Tiruchy and Madurai.

For buying tickets, the practical approach is to turn up at the relevant bus stand and buy from the counter or on board for government services; for private moffusil services to distant cities, booking ahead with the operator is the safer bet, especially around festivals and holidays.

Roads into and around the city

Karaikudi is well connected by road. The Tiruchy–Karaikkudi highway links Trichy, Pudukottai, Keeranur, Thirumayam and Karaikudi, and has been upgraded so that the trip between Trichy and Karaikudi takes only a few hours. National Highway 210 connects Karaikudi with Trichy and Ramanathapuram, passing through Pudukottai, and provides access to Tiruchy Airport; sections of it between Trichy and Karaikudi are four-lane. State Highway 29 runs from Thanjavur through Karaikudi.

Taxis and ride-hailing

In practice, visitors should expect to arrange local transport through auto-rickshaws and private car operators rather than relying on a hail-from-your-phone service, and should agree on a fare before setting off. For longer trips, such as to the airports, hiring a car and driver for the journey is the most straightforward option.

Walking

Karaikudi's terrain is predominantly flat, which makes walking comfortable in the cooler parts of the day. The climate is tropical, however, with hot summers averaging around 37 °C, so it is sensible to plan walks for the morning or evening and to carry water. The city covers a modest area, so central sights and markets are within reasonable walking range of one another.

Getting from the airport

Karaikudi has no working airport of its own. The nearest airports are Madurai Airport at Madurai and Tiruchirapalli International Airport at Tiruchirapalli, both roughly the same distance from town. From either airport, the practical route into Karaikudi is by road: Tiruchy is linked to Karaikudi by the upgraded highway and by National Highway 210, which itself provides access to Tiruchy Airport, and the drive takes a few hours. Hiring a car at the airport, or taking a bus from the city's bus stands onward to Karaikudi, are the options a visitor can rely on.
