Getting Around Banswara
Banswara is a small city in southern Rajasthan, set among the Aravalli hills and the islands of the Mahi River. It is not a large metropolis, and its transport network reflects that: there is no metro, no tram, and no local rail service within the city itself. Visitors should plan on a mix of road transport, with buses and taxis doing most of the work.
Rail Network
Banswara has no railway station of its own. The nearest railhead is Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh, which is a junction served by both metre-gauge and broad-gauge lines and connects to major cities across India. Travellers arriving by train will need to complete the final leg of the journey by road, typically by bus or taxi from Ratlam.
A railway line linking Ratlam and Dungarpur via Banswara has been proposed, with proceedings ongoing at the state government level, but it is not yet in service. Visitors should not expect to arrive in Banswara by train.
Buses and Public Transport
Buses are the mainstay of public transport for reaching Banswara and for moving between it and neighbouring towns. State transport corporations and private operators run services connecting Banswara with cities across Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, including Ahmedabad, Baroda, Bhopal, Ujjain, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Jaipur, Mount Abu, Mumbai and Delhi.
Direct road links also exist with nearby cities such as Ratlam, Dungarpur, Dahod and Jaipur. For shorter local hops, buses and taxis are available from Banswara to Arthuna via Partapur. Buses to Banswara can be picked up from Ratlam, Udaipur, Dahod and Ahmedabad.
Within the city, buses are not the primary way visitors get around; the city is compact enough that most local movement happens by taxi, auto-rickshaw or on foot. For intercity travel, buying a ticket at the bus stand or booking through a private operator is the usual approach.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are the most practical option for visitors who want door-to-door service, both for local trips and for longer journeys to and from Banswara. Taxis are available from Udaipur airport to Banswara, and taxis also run between Banswara and nearby towns such as Arthuna via Partapur.
Ride-hailing apps are not a dependable option in Banswara. Visitors should arrange taxis through their hotel, a local travel operator, or by hiring a vehicle at the bus stand or airport rather than relying on app-based bookings.
Walkability
Banswara is a small city with a population of just over one hundred thousand, and its central areas are compact enough that walking is a reasonable way to cover short distances. The city sits at an average elevation of about 302 metres, and the surrounding region is hilly, so some routes involve inclines.
Walking is best suited to exploring the immediate neighbourhood and nearby attractions rather than covering the whole city. For anything beyond a short stroll, a taxi or auto-rickshaw will be more comfortable, especially in the heat. Banswara has a tropical savanna climate, with maximum temperatures ranging from 27 to 41 °C, so daytime walking is best kept short and shaded.
Getting from the Airport into the City
Banswara has no airport. The nearest airport is Udaipur, about 160 km away. From Udaipur airport, taxis are available to take you directly to Banswara, which is the most straightforward option for visitors with luggage.
For a cheaper but less direct journey, state transport buses connect the airport area towards the Jodhpur bus terminal, from where you can continue onward. Given the distance, most visitors find a taxi from Udaipur airport to Banswara the simplest choice.
Practical Tips
- Plan your arrival around Ratlam (by train) or Udaipur (by air), then continue by road.
- Book intercity buses in advance during peak season, as services fill up.
- Arrange taxis through your hotel or a local operator rather than relying on ride-hailing apps.
- Carry water and sun protection if you plan to walk during the day, given the warm climate.
- Allow extra time for road journeys, as the terrain around Banswara is hilly and undulating.
