Getting Around Alwar

Alwar is a compact city in Rajasthan, roughly midway between Delhi to the south and Jaipur to the north. For a visitor, the practical picture is simple: the older parts of town are pleasant on foot, auto-rickshaws and taxis handle most point-to-point trips, and buses are mainly useful for reaching places outside the city rather than for moving within it.

Walking

Alwar is moderately walkable, particularly in its older, compact neighbourhoods, where narrow streets keep shops, services and sights close together. Outside these traditional zones, walkability drops off: the city has expanded outward, amenities are more spread out, and the infrastructure is less friendly to pedestrians. Overall, treat walking as a good option for exploring the historic core, but not as a realistic way to cover the whole city.

Auto-Rickshaws

Auto-rickshaws are widely available and are an essential means of local travel in Alwar. For most short trips around town, they are the default choice. Agree on the fare before you set off, as is customary for this kind of transport.

Buses and Public Transport

Government-run buses connect Alwar with nearby towns and villages, making them useful for excursions beyond the city. Urban transit within Alwar itself is less developed. A service called Alwar Vahini was introduced as an effort to modernize public transport, and its arrival also reflects the inefficiencies of the traditional networks. Taken as a whole, public transport in Alwar is described as lacking in efficiency, dependability and coverage, so it is best treated as a supplement to other modes rather than your main way of getting around.

Longer-distance buses are a practical way in and out of the city. Services run frequently from Deeg, Delhi and Jaipur, with journeys of roughly a few hours to each. Bus services operate from the Alwar old Bus Station, which sits a few kilometres from Alwar railway junction.

Rail

Alwar Junction, on the Delhi–Jaipur line, is the city's railway station and the anchor of its rail connections. The city also has a notable rail claim to fame: the Fairy Queen, a national treasure of India and the world's oldest working locomotive engine, operates as a tourist luxury train between Delhi and Alwar. It runs on the same route as the Palace on Wheels tourist train. If a heritage rail experience appeals to you, this is the one to look into.

There is no metro or tram network in Alwar itself. A metro rail system from Delhi to Alwar via the Behror route has been planned, and Alwar's designation as part of the National Capital Region has brought development projects including rapid rail to Delhi, but these are proposals and projects rather than services you can use today.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis and auto-rickshaws are among the common privately operated modes of medium-distance transport in the city. Ride-hailing services such as Uber are available and offer some convenience, which can be helpful if you prefer a set price and a booked ride over negotiating on the street.

Bicycles and Motorcycles

Bicycles and motorcycles are common in Alwar, and rental options exist. There is no extensive dedicated cycling infrastructure, and traffic conditions plus limited bike lanes affect safety and comfort, especially in busier areas. Biking works best for shorter, leisurely rides rather than daily commuting or longer trips.

Getting There from the Airport

Alwar has no airport of its own. The nearest options are Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, Jaipur International Airport, and an airport currently under development in Bhiwadi. From Delhi or Jaipur, the onward journey to Alwar is typically made by train or by bus. Buses run frequently from both Delhi and Jaipur, and Alwar Junction on the Delhi–Jaipur line connects the city by rail. Whichever you choose, plan on a journey of a few hours.
