Getting Around Bhadrak

Bhadrak is a city in Odisha and the headquarters of Bhadrak district. It sits on National Highway 16, northeast of Bhubaneswar, the state capital, which makes it reasonably easy to reach and to use as a base for exploring the district. Within the city, getting around is mostly a matter of short hops between the bus stands, the railway station at Charampa, the markets, and the temples.

Rail

Bhadrak's railway station is at Charampa, a short distance north of the city centre. If you arrive by train, expect to need a local vehicle — auto-rickshaw, cycle-rickshaw, or a bus — to cover the last stretch into town. The station is also the practical starting point for trips further afield in the district; travellers heading toward Chandbali, for example, commonly pick up buses or shared vehicles such as Tata Magic and Sumo from the station area.

Bhadrak has no metro or tram network. Rail and road are the only public transport modes you will use here.

Buses and Other Public Transport

Bhadrak City has three bus stops: the main one on NH 16 (also called the New Bus Stand), plus stops near Bant square and at Charampa. From these, there are frequent buses to and from Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Balasore, and Calcutta, so intercity travel by bus is straightforward.

For shorter local journeys and for reaching places around the district, shared vehicles are the norm. On routes out of the railway station, buses, Tata Magic, and Sumo vehicles are all used. A journey from Bhadrak station to Chandbali, for instance, takes roughly a couple of hours by these shared vehicles, with the bus option running slightly longer.

Taxis, Autos, and Ride-Hailing

Auto-rickshaws are the standard way to cover short distances, including the run between the railway station at Charampa and the city. For longer or more flexible trips, private and reserved vehicles can be hired; Tata Sumo and Bolero-type vehicles are commonly used on district routes. If you are heading to more remote spots, arranging a reserved vehicle in advance is the more reliable approach, since some routes involve river crossings that depend on tides and boat schedules.

Walking

Central Bhadrak is compact enough that walking works well for visiting nearby sights. The Maa Banka Basuli Temple, the oldest temple in the city, sits in the heart of Bhadrak near Kacheri Bazar, and Baba Lokanath Shiva Temple is also within the city — both are comfortably reached on foot once you are in the centre. For anything beyond the core, though, you will want a vehicle, since the railway station, the bus stands, and the outlying temples are spread out.

Getting There from the Airport

The nearest airport is Biju Patnaik International Airport, near Bhubaneswar to the southwest. There is no rail or metro link from the airport to Bhadrak; the practical options are road-based. Bhadrak lies on NH 16, and the city is connected by frequent buses to and from Bhubaneswar, so a bus is the simplest public-transport choice. A hired or reserved vehicle is the alternative, and it is the better option if you are carrying luggage or continuing on to a specific hotel or temple.

Reaching Places Around the District

Several of Bhadrak's notable sites lie outside the city, and the transport picture changes accordingly. The Akhandalamani Temple at Aradi, on the bank of the Baitarani River, and the Maa Bhadrakali Temple on the city's outskirts are both reachable by road. For destinations toward Chandbali and the Bhitarkanika area, the usual pattern is a shared vehicle or bus from Bhadrak, followed by a boat crossing — a motor launch over the Baitarani to Nalitapati Village River Jetty, from where the final stretch is a short walk or a brief auto-rickshaw ride. An alternative by private vehicle runs to Kasturikon Ghat, where a motorized country boat crosses the Brahmani River; this crossing is only possible at high tide, and at low tide you would use the Nalitapati River Jetty instead.

One practical caution: if you are coming from Kolkata by road, it is generally advised not to route via Chandbali from Bhadrak, and some shorter routes suggested by GPS are in poor condition. Confirm your route locally before setting out.
