Getting Around Vijayapura

Vijayapura (also known as Bijapur) is a small town, and most of its tourist spots are located close together. That compact layout shapes how you move around: a combination of walking and short rides will cover most of what a visitor wants to see, and you rarely need to plan complicated journeys across town.

On Foot

Walking is a genuinely practical way to see Vijayapura's sights because the main attractions sit near one another. The natural anchor for a day on foot is Mahatma Gandhi Square (often called MG Square or the chowk), which lies in the heart of the city. It is the main market place both for locals and for people visiting from nearby towns, so it makes a convenient base and a good place to orient yourself before setting off.

Auto Rickshaws

Auto rickshaws are plentiful in town, and their drivers know all the major attractions, so you can simply tell them where you want to go. The important practical point is that no rickshaw has a meter. You will need to negotiate the price before you set off, and bargaining firmly is expected.

Tonga (Horse Carriage)

A distinctive and quaint way to get around, especially for tourists, is the tonga or horse buggy. There is a horse buggy stand at MG Square, and outside Gol Gumbaz you will find many buggies waiting for business. A common approach is to negotiate a round figure for the whole day, after which the tonga will take you to all the important places. A small tip at the end — framed as something for the horse — is a friendly gesture. Note that these rides are not animal-friendly.

Buses and Public Transport

Vijayapura is well connected to other cities by bus, and the KSRTC Bus Stand is the point of arrival and departure for these services. For travel within the town itself, the source material describes foot and auto rickshaw as the main ways visitors get around, so plan on those rather than on an extensive local bus network.

If you are arriving from elsewhere in the region, buses are a workable option:

Rail

Bijapur has a railway station (station code BJP) and is linked by rail with Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad and other major cities, making the train a solid option for reaching the town. If you are coming from Badami, there are a few trains per day to Bijapur, with a journey of about two and a half hours. There is no metro or tram network in Vijayapura; rail here means the mainline railway station serving the town.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

The source material does not describe a taxi or ride-hailing scene in Vijayapura. In practice, the modes it does document — auto rickshaws and tongas — are the ones to rely on for getting around town, with negotiated fares rather than metered or app-based pricing.

Arriving by Air

Jagatjyoti Shri Basaveshwar Airport in Bijapur has completed construction, but at the time of the source material it had not yet started operations, with the government in talks with operators to begin services. Because the airport is not yet serving passengers, there is no airport-to-city transfer to plan for; visitors currently reach Vijayapura by rail or road instead.
