Getting Around Raichur
Raichur is a historic city in Karnataka, set between the Krishna and Tungabhadra rivers on the Deccan Plateau. For a visitor, the practical reality is that public transport within the city itself is limited, so most local movement is done by auto rickshaw or hired car. Longer journeys into the region, and arrivals from other cities, are handled mainly by rail and road.
Rail: Raichur Junction
Raichur Junction (station code RC) is the city's key transport asset and an important railway junction on the Mumbai–Chennai line. It sits primarily on the Solapur–Guntakal section, and the later-opened Mahabubnagar–Munirabad line also serves the station.
The station offers the facilities a traveller needs: computerized reservation, inquiry counters, waiting rooms, cloak rooms, restrooms, book stalls and refreshment stalls. Direct rail connectivity extends to major cities including Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Mysore, Vijayawada, Tirupati, Madurai, Thiruvananthapuram, Coimbatore, Jaipur, Varanasi and Ahmedabad, among others.
- Book train tickets in advance, especially during peak season.
- Use the reservation and inquiry counters at the station if you need to plan onward legs.
Metro and Tram
There is no metro or tram network in Raichur. The nearest metro is in Bengaluru, far to the south. Visitors should not expect any urban rail service for moving around the city.
Buses and Other Public Transport
Bus services are provided by the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) alongside private operators such as VRL Travels, Greenline Travels and Satyam Tour And Travel. The central bus stand on Station Road is the main hub for both intercity and interstate services.
Within the city, however, public transport is limited. Buses are best treated as a way of reaching Raichur and connecting to other towns rather than as a convenient way of sightseeing locally.
- Use the central bus stand on Station Road for intercity and interstate departures.
- Book intercity buses in advance, particularly in peak season.
Auto Rickshaws
Auto rickshaws are the main mode of transport for short trips within Raichur. They can be picked up on the spot, and local auto services also operate, including 24-hour options. For most visitors, autos will be the default way to reach the fort, temples and other nearby sights.
Taxis, Ride-Hailing and Car Rentals
Car rentals are available for both local and outstation travel, with hatchbacks, sedans and SUVs on offer from local operators, some of them running 24-hour services. Because public transport inside the city is limited, autos or hired cars are the recommended way to get around for local sightseeing.
- Hire a car if you plan to visit outlying sites such as Mudgal Fort, Malliabad Fort or the temples further afield.
- Ask your hotel or a local operator about 24-hour car and auto services if you expect to travel early or late.
Walking
Raichur's summers are hot, with temperatures going beyond 40 °C, and the region is warm and humid for most of the year. Rainfall arrives between May and August. Walking is therefore best kept to short stretches and to the cooler parts of the day; for anything beyond the immediate area, an auto or car is the more practical choice.
Getting from the Airport into the City
Raichur Airport has long been proposed to be built on an unpaved airstrip north of the city, following an emergency landing there by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1957. As things stand, there is no functioning airport serving the city, so visitors cannot fly directly into Raichur.
In practice, travellers reach Raichur by rail or road instead. The city is well connected by both, lying roughly 450 km from Bengaluru, the state capital, and about 200 km from Hyderabad. Road access is anchored by National Highway 167, with the Panji–Hyderabad Highway and the Surat–Chennai Expressway in development.
- Plan to arrive by train at Raichur Junction or by bus at the central bus stand on Station Road.
- If you are coming from Bengaluru or Hyderabad, treat the journey as a rail or road trip rather than a flight.
