Getting Around Mangaluru: A Practical Transport Guide
Mangaluru, located in coastal Karnataka, is well-connected by road, rail, air, and sea. As a visitor, you'll find multiple options for moving around the city and reaching it from outside, though getting familiar with local transport systems takes a bit of orientation.
City Buses and Public Transport
Local buses are the backbone of transport within Mangaluru. The city bus network is operated primarily by private companies, with the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) running a growing number of routes. Green-coloured KSRTC buses operate from the State Bank bus stand, serving different parts of the city and suburbs.
Bus routes within the city use a unified numbering scheme, though destination signs are written in Kannada. Don't be discouraged by this—locals are generally helpful with directions. The minimum bus fare is low, and student fares are half price. For visiting nearby towns and villages, limited-stop express buses are available, with fares varying based on distance. KSRTC also operates air-conditioned Volvo buses to select destinations.
The State Bank bus stand, located at the city centre behind St. Paul's Church and the State Bank of India branch, serves as the main hub for city and suburban bus services. The Central Bus Stand near Town Hall is another departure point.
Auto-rickshaws
Auto-rickshaws are widely available throughout Mangaluru and provide convenient point-to-point transport. Meters are installed in all autos plying inside the city and suburbs, though not all drivers use them consistently. The minimum charge is ₹35 for trips up to 1.5 km, with rates increasing for longer distances. Between 10 pm and 5 am, drivers typically charge 1.5 times the meter reading.
For journeys to outlying areas, autos may charge 1.5 times the standard fare. Negotiate rates beforehand, especially for longer trips. If you encounter difficulties with drivers, seeking out a nearby police officer can help ensure fair treatment.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing Services
Ola Cabs and Uber operate throughout Mangaluru, extending their services to Mangaluru International Airport. These apps offer an alternative to traditional autos and provide meter-based, transparent pricing. Motorcycle rental services have also emerged as a transport option in the city.
Traditional taxi services using white Ambassador cars and Indicas are available, particularly for long-distance routes. Car rental facilities are available throughout the city for those who prefer self-drive options.
Walkability and Street-Level Navigation
Mangaluru is navigable on foot in central areas. Carrying a city map helps orient yourself, and locals are generally willing to help with directions. Railway Network
Mangaluru has three major railway stations serving different routes and destinations. Mangalore Central (station code: MAQ) is located at Hampankatta in the city centre and serves as the terminus for trains bound for Mangaluru. Mangalore Junction (station code: MAJN) in Kankanady, about 5 km from the city centre, handles most long-distance trains and trains that don't terminate in Mangaluru. Surathkal (station code: SL) is located further out and accommodates many trains from North and South India.
The city has direct rail connections to major Indian cities including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Hyderabad, and others. Trains operate via two main railway lines: the Southern Railway and the Konkan Railway, which was completed in 1998 and provides the primary northern connectivity to Mumbai.
Getting from the Airport to the City
Mangalore International Airport is located near Bajpe, approximately 14 to 20 km northeast of the city centre. State-government-run buses connect the airport directly to the city, providing a budget-friendly option. Ola Cabs and Uber services extend to the airport, offering app-based booking. Prepaid taxis are available from the airport, typically at a flat rate of ₹350–400.
The airport features a new terminal (operational since mid-2009) located about 8 km from the city, which accommodates both domestic and international passenger traffic. The airport connects Mangaluru to major Indian cities and international destinations in the Middle East.
Long-Distance Bus Services
For travel beyond the city, two main bus stands serve long-distance routes. The KSRTC Bus Stand at Bejai (north of the city centre) operates scheduled services to Mumbai, Bengaluru, Mysore, Goa, and other destinations within and beyond Karnataka. Buses from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh state transport corporations also operate from this stand.
The State Bank bus stand at the city centre handles many private inter-district and inter-taluk services. Additionally, several private bus companies maintain offices near Milagres Church, where you can book semi-deluxe, sleeper, and Volvo-type buses to various destinations.
Private operators such as Ganesh Travels, SRS Travels, Ideal Travels, Sugama Tourists, VRL, and Aero Bus provide daily services to cities including Bengaluru, Mumbai, Goa, and Hubli-Dharwad. These operators offer different service categories and may adjust fares during festival seasons. KSRTC buses maintain consistent pricing year-round.
Highway Connections
Five national highways connect Mangaluru to other parts of Karnataka and India, making it accessible by private vehicle or hired car. NH-17 (now NH-66) connects northward toward Goa and Mumbai, while NH-48 (now NH-75) provides the main route toward Bengaluru. Highway driving offers scenic routes through the Western Ghats or along the coast, though roads can be narrow and experience heavy traffic from commercial vehicles.
Sea Access
The New Mangalore Port, located about 10 km north of the city's central business district, handles international cargo and receives cruise ships from Europe, North America, and the United Arab Emirates. While primarily a cargo and cruise facility, it represents an alternative entry point for visitors arriving by sea, and foreigners can enter through the port using an electronic visa.
