Getting Around Hubballi: A Practical Guide
Hubballi (also spelled Hubli) is the larger half of the Hubballi–Dharwad twin cities in North Karnataka, and it doubles as a commercial hub and a regional transport centre. For a visitor, the good news is that the city is compact enough to navigate without much fuss, and the transport options are straightforward once you know what to expect. This guide covers how people actually move around, from city buses and autorickshaws to arriving from the airport.
How Visitors Move Around the City
Hubballi does not have a metro or tram system, so getting around relies on road-based transport: buses, autorickshaws, taxis, and ride-hailing-style private cabs. The city bus network is the backbone of local travel, and it also links Hubballi with its twin city, Dharwad, which sits a short drive away. Autorickshaws are plentiful for short hops, and private taxis are the most comfortable option for longer trips or when you have luggage.
Rail
Hubballi Junction railway station is the city's main railhead, and the city is well connected by train to major parts of India. If you are arriving by rail, you will likely come into this station, which puts you within reach of the city centre and onward transport. Indian Railways also has a significant presence here — the city is home to a major diesel locomotive shed that dates back to the late 19th century and remains an important railway facility.
Buses and Public Transport
The North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) is headquartered in Hubballi and runs public bus services across the region, including Belagavi, Dharwad, Uttara Kannada, Bagalkot, Gadag, and Haveri districts. For visitors, the most useful part of this network is the suburban city bus service connecting various parts of Hubballi and Dharwad.
- Hubballi–Dharwad buses: City buses run frequently between the two cities, making it easy to hop between them without arranging a private vehicle.
- Local routes: Buses also connect Dharwad Central Bus Terminus (CBT) with various localities around Dharwad, and similar services cover Hubballi's neighbourhoods.
- Intercity buses: Hubballi is well connected by bus to Bengaluru, Pune, Mumbai, Mangaluru, Mysuru, and Goa, served by both private carriers and NWKRTC.
- Private operators: Prominent private carriers include VRL and Kamat, which offer sleeper and seating coaches on routes such as Bengaluru, Pune, Mumbai, and Mangaluru. Volvo buses operated by private and state carriers are generally faster and more comfortable than ordinary deluxe buses.
- Women travellers: Under the state's Shakti scheme, women can travel free on NWKRTC buses by presenting a government-issued ID such as a Voter ID, Aadhaar, or Driving License. NWKRTC has also introduced modern light blue urban buses in Hubballi equipped with CCTV, GPS, LED displays, voice announcements, and panic buttons.
Tickets on city and intercity buses are typically bought from the conductor on board. For longer intercity journeys, booking ahead with private operators is advisable, especially for overnight sleeper services.
Taxis and Autorickshaws
Autorickshaws are widely available for travel within city limits, but be prepared to negotiate: local rickshaws often refuse to ply by the meter, so agreeing on a fare before you set off is the practical approach. Private taxis are also available and can be hired through local travel agents, which many visitors find to be the most convenient option for getting around reliably. Taxi service is available around the clock at Hubballi Airport, so late-night or early-morning arrivals are not a problem.
Walkability
Hubballi is a working commercial city rather than a pedestrian-oriented tourist town, so walking is best suited to short distances within a neighbourhood rather than as a primary way to cross the city. For anything beyond a brief stroll, buses, autorickshaws, or taxis will serve you better.
Getting from the Airport into the City
Hubballi Airport (IATA: HBX) is a domestic airport serving the twin cities and the wider North Karnataka region. It sits on Gokul Road and is the third busiest airport in Karnataka.
- By taxi: Taxi service is available at the airport 24 hours a day, making this the simplest way to reach the city or continue on to Dharwad.
- To Dharwad: If your destination is Dharwad rather than Hubballi, note that the airport lies roughly 15 km from Dharwad, so a taxi is the practical choice.
- Onward connections: Once in the city, you can pick up city buses, autorickshaws, or private taxis to reach your final destination.
Practical Tips
- Agree on autorickshaw fares in advance, since meters are often not used.
- For comfort and reliability, hiring a private taxi through a local travel agent is a solid default.
- Use the frequent Hubballi–Dharwad city buses if you want to explore both twin cities on a budget.
- Women travelling on NWKRTC buses can take advantage of free travel under the Shakti scheme with valid government ID.
- Book intercity buses ahead for overnight or long-distance routes, and choose Volvo services if you want a faster, more comfortable ride.
